About the Author

George Lee, MD earned his medical degree from the University of Miami--Leonard School of Medicine in 2006. He spent a year doing research in ENT, followed by a year of residency in anesthesia, during which time he took the USMLE Step 3. Description: This Step 3 USMLE board preparation book organizes the content by medical specialty and presents the information using brief synopses of different diseases and then goes through a detailed case management strategy. It also includes several CCS review cases.
Purpose: The purpose is to help residents review for the USMLE Step 3 exam with a focus on management and CCS practice. The book meets most of its objectives. It does place great emphasis on case management and it has a good amount of CCS review. However, it is not a full review for USMLE Step 3, as it only covers a few specific diseases for each medical subspecialty.
Audience: It is intended for first- or second-year medical residents in any specialty who are preparing to take the USMLE Step 3.
Features: The book covers most areas of internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, and orthopedics, although there are no separate sections on infectious disease or oncology. Pediatric cases are mixed throughout. It covers case management particularly well and in detail, which is helpful for learning how to actually manage patients on rotations, but might go a little beyond what is required for the board exam. The CCS review is also very good. There are 16 pages of high-definition, color photos that are helpful. There are also references in each chapter to other areas of the book that might be closely related. Throughout the book, there are CCS tips and other pearls. The biggest shortcoming of the book is its limited scope. What it covers, it covers very well, but there are only a handful of cases for each specialty. Altogether, the cases probably encompass only a third of the material that needs to be reviewed for the test. In addition, the pictures are few in number.
Assessment: This book does well in its emphasis on case management and goes into some detail in that area. This makes it useful on clinical rotations in addition to its use as a board review study aid. It also has a strong CCS review component to it. Its biggest drawback is its limited scope. Unfortunately, because it only covers about a third of the cases tested on Step 3 of the USMLE, I would recommend this as an adjunctive study aid that could be used on the wards, but I would not use it as my sole resource.
