About the Author

John Furia, MD has been engaged in full time orthopedic surgery and sports medicine clinical practice since 1995. He has served as team physician to numerous high school, university, and professional teams, is an active orthopedic consultant to several sporting organizations, and in 2008 was named to the Central Pennsylvania Magazine “Hot List” as one of the best surgeons in central Pennsylvania.
Dr Furia holds numerous leadership positions and is presently the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of the Evangelical Ambulatory Surgical Center, president of the Union County Medical Society, and a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Advisory Organization.
John received his Bachelors of Science Degree with Honors, magna cum laude from Brown University. John earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed a general surgery internship at Columbia University’s St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, N.Y. He completed a year-long orthopedic sports medicine fellowship in Houston, Texas prior to beginning private practice.
In addition to Collegiate Fitness, Dr Furia has published numerous scientific studies on a wide variety of orthopedic and sports medicine conditions in peer reviewed journals such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Arthroscopy The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, The Journal of Pediatrics, and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. He is the co-author of Rotator Cuff Disorders-Clinical Medicine and Pathology (2012) and has been quoted in several fitness magazines including Men’s Health.
Dr Furia is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, America College of Sports Medicine, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Athletic Association, and International Society for Medical Shock Wave Therapy.
John enjoys competitive cycling, running, weight training, wine, travel, and dining with his wife. John and Elizabeth Long-Furia live above their restaurant in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
