COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
The purpose of this book is to introduce the student to communication systems and the broad principles of modern communication theory at an early stage in the undergraduate curriculum. It begins with the study of specific communication systems and gradually develops the underlying role of the signal-to-noise ratio and the bandwidth in limiting the rate of information transmission. The student is also introduced to the concept of the power density spectrum of non-random signals. This concept is then extended to random signals without any formal development. Features:
• Throughout the book, the emphasis is on a physical appreciation of the concepts rather than mathematical manipulation.
• Wherever possible, the concepts and results are interpreted intuitively.
• The basic concepts of information theory are not introduced as axioms but are developed heuristically.
Contents
1. Signal Analysis 2. Transmission of Signals and Power Density Spectra 3. Communication Systems: Amplitude Modulation 4. Communication Systems: Angle Modulation 5. Communication Systems: Pulse Modulation 6. Noise 7. Performance of Communication Systems 8. Introduction to Information Transmission 9. Elements of Digital Communication 10. Bibliography
