Description: As its title suggests, this book describes many of the potential surgical and nonsurgical complications that may arise in the field of pediatric otolaryngology; in fact, it is the first book of its kind to focus on this area.
Purpose: According to the author, the purpose is to give healthcare providers a resource to assist them in preventing, identifying in a timely fashion, and managing complications in pediatric otolaryngology. Because the ultimate objective of this book is to improve patient care, it is a worthy one. The authors meet this objective, as they present this information in a clear and concise manner throughout the book.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for healthcare providers, both physician and nonphysician, of pediatric otolaryngologic patients. This book would best serve otolaryngology residents, fellows, and attending physicians and pediatric attending physicians. Both editors are fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists with extensive experience in the field, and the contributors are among the experts within their fields.
Features: This book covers a broad range of topics, including topics specific to otolaryngology, such as otology, head and neck surgery, and rhinology, as well as topics in the general field of medicine, such as risk management and continuing medical education. These latter topics are discussed as they apply to pediatric otolaryngology. Each chapter is well organized and contains an index, which makes navigating the book, even within a given chapter, very easy.
Assessment: This is a valuable addition to the library of otolaryngologists, both pediatric and nonpediatric. It focuses on many of the practical issues that arise in the care of the pediatric otolaryngologic patient, and these issues may be encountered by the generalist as well as the pediatric subspecialist. This book should have no difficulty meeting its goal of improving patient care delivered by its readers.
