Beginning with Hildegard of Bingen, the dictionary covers Western (European, American, Australian) women artists from the Middle Ages to the modern periods, limiting itself to women born before 1945. Several hundred entries of varying lengths provide biographical details and assessments of each artist's work, along with basic bibliographical and exhibit information. A dozen introductory essays provide historic context. The emphasis is on painters and sculptors, though the reference includes some entries on women who worked in photography and applied arts.
