After discovering she shared an unusual psychic link with Eudoxia, Ruthie returned to her own timeline, but in the Alexandrian timeline, Eudoxia was believed to be dead, her timebands stolen from her.
Now, Ruthie and Eudoxia reunite and begin the fight to regain control of the twelve timebands. Along the way, they recruit old and new friends and face old and new adversaries. Intertwined with the story are the dictated memoirs of Ruthie's husband, Miles Terwilliger, as he recounts his life in a Confederate States at war, for the second time, with the North, and how he became a Traveler.
