Description: This is a review book for CRNA certification. It includes four sections on airway management; pharmacology; physiology, pathophysiology, and anesthesia case management; and anesthesia technology and equipment review.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to serve as a review of the scientific underpinnings for the foundation for competent anesthesia practice. It provides a comprehensive resource for CRNAs to evaluate and update their clinical knowledge. These are worthy objectives and the book provides a concise, up-to-date review in one place for practicing CRNAs and prepares new anesthesia nurse providers with the critical information needed to pass certification.
Audience: The book is written for SRNAs who have graduated and are preparing for the national certification exam. It is also for currently practicing CRNAs who will take the continuing professional practicing certification exam. The book meets the needs of the intended audience and is written by leading experts in nurse anesthesia.
Features: The book is easy to follow and select topics to review. It includes tables and charts pertinent to anesthesia practice, knowledge checks, and an answer key. The charts and tables are easy to read and the detailed table of contents is helpful when looking for a specific topic. A chapter dedicated solely to vulnerable populations would enhance the content for anesthesia providers.
Assessment: This is a quality review book. It claims to be the only book on this topic; however, in my research, I found eight others including flash cards and a book of 1,000 questions. Other books offer a question-and-answer format with rationales, such as Certification Review for Nurse Anesthesia, Burns (McGraw Hill, 2014). This book offers content to review plus minimal questions to test the readers' knowledge, but it seems to be the most comprehensive review available that is not associated with a board review program.
