Overview

In Celtic Daily Light, author Ray Simpson, founding guardian of the Celtic Community of Aidan and Hilda on Lindisfarne, shares insight and inspiration with readers for each day of the year. Every day, readers will find:

-a passage of Scripture establishing the theme of the day
-a Bible lectionary consisting of a Psalm, an Old Testament and a New Testament reading
-a piece of literature or quotation about the Celtic saints, such as Samson or Brigid
-a prayer or prayers to link the day's readings in a powerful, intercessory way.

The great wealth of Celtic literature and the revival in popularity of the Celtic tradition offers a positive source of inspiring and deeply spiritual material, while still being practical for daily use. As Simpson writes, "The essence of Celtic spirituality is a heart wide open to God in every person, in all the world. It is to do with crossing frontiers, not erecting barriers. It goes so deep that, without losing what is distinctive, it becomes universal."

Celtic Daily Light will continue to inspire and guide countless readers seeking a deeper spirituality.

About the Author

Ray Simpson was one of the first modern Celtic Christians to describe the Holy Spirit as a wild goose. Centuries of Christians had seen the dove’s white wings as the embodiment of the Divine Spirit’s mysterious presence—but the Celts remind us that the Spirit is a disturber as well as a comforter . . . wild, free, and unpredictable. Ray wrote:

"Great Spirit,
Wild Goose of the Almighty
Be my eye in the
dark places;
Be my flight in the
trapped places;
Be my host in the
wild places;
Be my brood in the
barren places;
Be my formation in the
lost places."

Founding guardian of the Celtic Community of Aidan and Hilda, Ray Simpson lives today on Lindisfarne, the Holy Island that is known as the Cradle of Christianity for English-speaking people. Here, in 635, Aidan brought the Gospel to the English and built an indigenous English church. Today, Ray Simpson walks in Aidan’s footprints, working to rebuild a modern church that is rooted in Aidan’s legacy.

“Why don’t we make this global village our home and earth our friend,” Ray asks us, “and let our feet follow our heart until we find places of resurrection? . . . As we walk the world we hold a book in each hand: in one, the book of Scripture, in the other, the Book of Nature. . . and we have heard the call of the Wild Goose, the untamable Spirit of God. We are ready for the Spirit to lead us into wild, windy, and well-worn places, in the knowledge that God is helping us to restore a weakened church to its mission, and a fragmented world to its wholeness.”
