Dark Days Rough Roads by Matthew D Mark

3rd edition, August 26th, 2013

A normal day at work turns into a man's worst nightmare when the country is plunged into dark and dangerous times within a matter of minutes when an EMP is detonated over U.S. soil. He needs unconventional skills and resources to mount a daring and deceptive plan to retrieve his daughter who is away at college. He's hundreds of miles away and it seems like thousands. It's a trip he planned for, but a trip resulting in some unexpected and deadly events as chaos grips the country. There are more enemies than friends along the way and the journey becomes a fight for their lives. Their hope to make it home safely and move to a safe haven ends quickly. A rogue militia group has a different idea in mind.

Both family and friends find themselves battling for freedom. Without technology, society begins to collapse. Without the basics to survive, people change. Without rule of law, it's every person for them selves. They have Dark Days and Rough Roads ahead of them.

Post apocalyptic and dystopian fans will love this book. Doomsday preppers and survivalists will value the ideas and knowledge loaded inside. Everything else aside, this book is pure entertainment.

Overall, I thought the story was a pretty decent plot. The story picks up almost immediately in the beginning. It wasn't like many other novels where it takes a few chapters to get interesting. Right from the get go I had a hard time putting this book down. However, the only reason this book is getting three stars as opposed to five is due to the very poor proof reading. It has excessive typos and in some places there wee words missing out of sentences, quotations missing which made the dialogue a little confusing trying to figure out who was saying what and just basic things like the uses of their, there and they're. It's just too many rookie mistakes. Something you would expect from maybe a high school freshman. Not an author.

Good book would like to see more character development .

I had to stop reading this book because it was just so unbelievable and dryly written. The main character is like the MacGyver of the Apocalypse. I just couldn't keep reading.

Even though it was a bit confusing and hard to follow at times, those times were very few. Some awkward sentence structure on occasion, but nonetheless a good story for sure - pulls you in right out of the chute. And I would read a sequel. Now, it's not a "modern classic", but the story was good enough to be engaging from beginning to end. Character development wasn't bad for a first-time author... at least it seemed written by a first-time author. But Holy Mother of Pearl was the editing bad! This is my biggest critique, and the books' biggest flaw. Maybe the book was self- published? And self-edited? That would explain the lack of quality editing- To the point of being distracting. I've never made as many editing comments as I did reading this book. In fact I never felt compelled to before now. Overall, very good potential. And with more experience -and constructive critique from experienced writers- I think this author could really make a mark out there. Watch the editing errors, and good first try!

It's hard to believe that any one person can be that well prepared for a exact event, but it gives a lot of food for thought and things that could be done to prepare. Good, solid story line and very entertaining.

1st, the cons. Since this book is apparently self published and probably self edited, one will notice occasional grammatical errors. These however were minor and no distraction, at least to me. Secondly, the main character, Roger, at times appeared to a little shallow, but this was possibly the authors attempt to make the character appear more human. Ok, not a big deal. Lastly, some of the preps, although probably good ideas, it was a stretch to believe Roger could have completed all described. Artistic license, ok, again, no big deal. Pros. First, although told in a simple narrative, this was a good read, enjoyed the story to the end.Prep'ing narratives were detailed, but not to the point of tedious. 900+ pages flew by. Have read several series in this genre that would have made this 3-4 books! Author provides a great value for the money. Highly recommend this book for its entertainment and informative story.
