Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite Lawrence Pratt’s Dark Deception is an engaging and thought-provoking fiction that centers on the lives of people in the totalitarian, faith-based community of The American Church of the New Christ. In essence, the story behind Dark Deception is built on the factual events of a religious group; premarital as well as extramarital sex is forbidden, members must be virgins at their first time marriage, the act of adultery and abortion would deprive the members of their rights and membership. I was fascinated with the back story of the church – clearly Lawrence Pratt has the facts to strengthen his storyline. Even though it is fictional, the realistic nature of the novel’s theme itself is enough to fascinate any reader. The characters are also intriguing with authenticity. Ann Burton and Denise Ellis are two closet non-believers attending church college. They find strength in each other to not let the church rule their choices in life until the day they go their separate ways. John and Kate Torino are converts who become increasingly disillusioned with the church. Then there’s the young and pregnant Ruth Dabney, whose lover is secretly murdered, which further spirals her life down into the church’s control. Readers can certainly connect to all the characters; their love and pain in the midst of treachery as well as an insatiable greed for power and control in the community. Simply put, Dark Deception definitely lives up to its name. The plot’s unpredictable deceptive twists will hold readers’ attention until the end.

Loved the book, very entertaining, kept me looking forward to what would happen next. Really enjoyed the short stories about different characters that were encapsulated into one overall story.
