Death At The Dog Track
The story begins with a gruesome, bizarre murder at Florida Sands Greyhound Park. Gruesome - because the victim’s body was torn apart on the homestretch in front of the grandstand. Bizarre - because the murder weapon used was the mechanical lure. The body is mutilated beyond recognition. Eddie Ryan is a former federal agent with the U.S. Treasury Department and senior partner of Ryan, Corrigan and Dunne Private Investigations. He immediately suspects animal rights terrorists who have been viciously attacking Greyhound racetracks and breeders for several years. They’ve vowed to end Greyhound racing. His partners in the agency, contracted by the racing industry for track security, are Clocker Corrigan, a former N.Y.P.D. homicide detective; Dr. Maureen (Mo) Dunne, a vivacious psychology Ph.D. well known to law enforcement for her accurate profiles on criminals. She’s also a computer whiz heading up the agency’s department of brilliant computer investigations. And a loveable old Bloodhound named Whizzer. A much decorated, retired officer of Dade County Police Department Canine Division in south Florida. Ryan and Corrigan begin by reviewing old files of bomb threats, Greyhound mutilation and murder for which animal rights terrorists are blamed. They believe they’ll find a lead to whoever is organizing and funding this conspiracy. The files reveal the true story of the animal rights movement. A worldwide organization for which most governments in the western world have established antiterrorist departments. Because of the countrywide conspiracy, the F.B.I., already monitoring animal rights, joins the agency’s investigation. Special Agent Gordon Barlow heads the division in Washington assigned to the case. The syndicate is upset with the dog track assaults. The pari-mutuel handle is falling and so is off-track betting. It’s badly hurting business. During his years with the N.Y.P.D., Clocker Corrigan was working undercover investigating the gaming operations of organized crime. He was so good at handicapping (hence the nickname Clocker) that a mid-western Don, responsible for horse and dog racing, betting lines and casino gambling for the Brotherhood, hired Clocker to work for him. Corrigan never betrayed either side while successfully operating as a double agent. Thus managed to stay alive until leaving the department to join Ryan’s Florida agency. So, unknown to the F.B.I., Clocker’s old employer Don Vittorio also joins forces with Ryan and Corrigan. Mo Dunne, through her computer expertise, discovers a link between former track employees, suspect in the attacks and a billionaire investment banker and insurance company owner named Christopher Harding. The investigation, although centered in south Florida moves to vibrant, picturesque locations in Barbados and Muskoka Lakes District in Canada. These scenic chapters add human interest to the story.
The F.B.I. enlists the super-secret spy network called Echelon. Which electronically monitors terrorists, drug trafficking, money laundering and mafia organizations worldwide. It’s an intelligence alliance between the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that, in fact, exists today. Death At The Dog Track holds the reader in suspense with two story lines. The mystery of the murder investigation that began at Florida Sands and the hidden story exposing animal rights terrorism throughout the U.S. and around the world. Death At The Dog Track is not just another cold, clinical suspense mystery. There are moments of tender human interest, a love triangle, vivid location scenes and torrid sex between characters-but hey-that’s what real life is all about.
