CHAPTER 1

Through The Looking Glass

Up until four years ago, nobody had ever heard of WikiLeaks, but the fact is, it is becoming massively important. There are currently over 74,000,000 references to WikiLeaks on Google. It has been said that in just three years, WikiLeaks has published more scoops than the Washington Post has in thirty. The operating manual from the Guantanamo prison camp was leaked by the group, and most recently, a CIA report on how to manipulate public opinion in France and Germany with the goal of keeping their troops in Afghanistan.

During his live television show, Brian Lehrer asked Salon's columnist Glen Greenwald and Cryptome's John Young: "So, what does it mean when anyone can post secret information on line? Is it a wonderful new era of openness and citizen journalism or is it an irresponsible age in which governments, corporations and individuals become embarrassed, ineffective and even in danger." No matter how one decides to look at it, WikiLeaks represents a change to the status quo, an international and non-corporate interference into the business of information; a brown paper envelope of the digital age, striking fear into the heart of everyone with something to hide.

Or so it seems.

But there is more to WikiLeaks than meets the eye.

"There is an old English expression ... that a man is known by the company he keeps. What I find significant however, is the company WikiLeaks keeps, especially the funny organizations and foundations they call friends."

WikiLeaks had also entered into negotiations with several corporate foundations with a view to securing funding.

As Adam K. East reports in Executive Intelligence Review, "A closer look at the activities of these private agencies reveals that there was much more at stake. ... The source of policy for most of these groups was Anglo-American intelligence" and their One World Company planners. "As such, these groups lobbied the U.S. Congress, set up conferences, launched propaganda campaigns, and, in some cases, even provided military training for various mujahideen groups," while simultaneously supporting oppressive dictatorships around the world.

For example, part of the "process of cooptation is implemented and financed by US based foundations including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and Freedom House (FH)."

Freedom House is a Washington based organization founded in 1941 by Leo Cherne to promote American entry into World War II. "During the Cold War, [it was used] as a vehicle for CIA-directed anti-communist propaganda. Its recent activities have been a central role as NGO in Washington-directed destabilization [efforts] in Tibet, Myanmar, Ukraine, Georgia, Serbia and other countries apparently not pursuing policies satisfactory to certain powerful people in the USA."

Amongst its marquis projects, it launched the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya (ACPC). Jeffrey Steinberg, writing for the EIR reports that, "The goal of the group was unabashed: to interfere into the internal affairs of Russia under the doublespeak slogan that the 'Russo-Chechen war' must be settled 'peacefully.'"

Freedom House is another funny organization, that under the cover of benevolent, peace-loving mover of democratic reform "has worked closely with George Soros' Open Society Institutes ... in promoting such projects as the 2005 Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan that brought the Washington-friendly dictator and drug boss, Kurmanbek Bakiyev to power."

Steinberg made it quite clear when he stated in his September 17, 2004 Executive Intelligence Review article, "A review of the group's leading members reveals that this is anything but a bunch of peaceniks. The founding chairs of the group [ACPC] were Brzezinski, former Reagan Secretary of State Alexander "I'm in Charge Here" Haig, and former Congressman Stephen Solarz (D-N.Y.). Members include: Elliott Abrams, Kenneth Adelman, Richard Allen, Richard Burt, Eliot Cohen, Midge Decter, Thomas Donohue, Charles Fairbanks, Frank Gaffney, Irving Louis Horowitz, Bruce Jackson, Robert Kagan, Max Kampelman, William Kristol, Michael Ledeen, Seymour Martin Lipset, Robert McFarlane, Joshua Muravchik, Richard Perle, Richard Pipes, Norman Podhoretz, Arch Puddington, Gary Schmitt, Helmut Sonnenfeldt, Caspar Weinberger, and James Woolsey. ACPC operates out of Freedom House and the Jamestown Foundation, a Cold War-era Washington think-tank which includes Brzezinski and Woolsey on its board, and which boasts a mission of conducting 'democracy'-promoting operations inside 'totalitarian' states."

Freedom House has "connections and/or are affiliated to a number of establishment organizations, major corporate foundations and charities" has been confirmed from WikiLeaks-published email exchanges at the outset of the project on January 4, 2007. This included an invitation to Freedom House (FH) to participate in the WikiLeaks advisory board:

We are looking for one or two initial advisory board member from FH who may advise on the following:

1. The needs of FH as consumer of leaks exposing business and political corruption.

2. The needs for sources of leaks as experienced by FH.

3. FH recommendations for other advisory board members.

4. General advice on funding, coalition [sic] building and decentralised operations and political framing.

Furthermore, "both FH and the NED have links to the US Congress, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and the US business establishment. Both the NED and FH are known to have ties to the CIA."

"National Endowment for Democracy, the congressionally created funding conduit for Project Democracy" is a top-secret project with a clear cut objective: undermine any and all governments around the world whose interests do not coincide with the publicly stated long range interests of the United States government. In his fabulous piece on the protest movement in Egypt, Michel Chossudovski writes that "The NED is actively involved in Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria. Freedom House supports several civil society organizations in Egypt," funded through the U.S. State Department.

The history of National Endowment for Democracy reads like a John Le Carré novel, full of sinister characters, behind-the-scenes covert agendas and special interests that when taken together, have very little to do with promoting democracy throughout the planet. "The NED was established by the Reagan administration after the CIA's role in covertly funding efforts to overthrow foreign governments was brought to light, leading to the discrediting of the parties, movements, journals, books, newspapers and individuals that received CIA funding. ... As a bipartisan endowment, with participation from the two major parties, as well as the AFL-CIO and US Chamber of Commerce, the NED took over the financing of foreign overthrow movements, but overtly and under the rubric of 'democracy promotion.'"

Among the plethora of private "aid" agencies and think-tanks with direct links to Freedom House, providing active support and which stand out head and shoulders above the rest is the little known but extremely powerful and well-connected group – Afghan Aid. What does an organization involved with Afghanistan have to do with Egypt? Nothing, except that it forms a part of the interlocked apparatus of financial and political interests linked to Freedom House. With the ostensible aim of helping the political opposition in Egypt, these agencies have provided massive "overt and covert funding for black operations by various U.S. governmental agencies" not only in Egypt, but also in Russia, Africa, South America and the Middle East. For example, Afghan Aid, was the primary organization to massively support Afghan 'mujahideen' (holy warriors), as they came to be known at the time of Soviet invasion.

The main sponsor and funder of the group was Viscount Cranbourne, Lord Privy Seal (chief of the Queen's Privy Council), and Leader of the House of Lords.

Viscount Cranbourne is a member of the Cecil family, one of the oldest and most powerful oligarchical families in Britain, whose ancestor, Lord Burghley, was the Lord Privy Seal and Lord Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth I. Viscount Cranbourne is the son and heir to the current Sixth Marquis of Salisbury. His grandfather, the Fifth Marquis, had been a British colonial secretary in World War II, and a post-war foreign minister, as well as having been Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords. His great-great-grandfather, the famous Third Marquis of Salisbury, had been the British prime minister and foreign minister from 1878-87, and again 1900-02; he helped lay the basis for World War I.

In other words, WikiLeaks is looking to plug into financial and intellectual support from some of the highest echelons of the ruling elite. Does that make sense? It does, if you come from a parallel universe of smoke and mirrors.

In a series of articles in the October 13, 1995 issue of the Executive Intelligence Review, titled "The Anglo-American support apparatus behind the Afghani mujahideen," another organization heavily involved in all kinds of subversive activities with links to the Freedom House was named the, Afghan Relief Committee (ARC). The ARC "was established in 1980 by Wall Street investment banker and spy John Train, who handles the family fortunes of some of the oldest and most powerful U.S. establishment families, such as the Mellons. ... CIA director William Casey was on the ARC's board of directors." We will meet the Mellons, in all their splendor, later in our story.

The "stated purpose of the ARC was to raise 'seed money' for medical organizations treating casualties among the mujahideen." However, its real operation was far more sinister. One of ARC's favorites was Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and his Hezb-i-Islami group as well as the Haqqani clan and the money raised was more often than not channelled into the warlords' pockets.

The names Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and the Haqqanis may not ring a bell with most readers, but they were and still remain the absolute favorites with the Central Intelligence Agency's long-range planners.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, one of the most sadistic warlords and drug traffickers, was on the CIA payroll and received more than $30 million during the war against the Red Army in the 1980s. Others who enjoyed the favors of the Agency were the Haqqani clan. Between 1980 and 1986, the CIA had given the Haqqanis $28 million, plus Stinger missiles and 4 tanks. The Haqqani immediately sold the tanks to the Soviets and when the war ended, the CIA bought back the Stingers for 10 times their value, paying nearly $400,000 for each. The Haqqanis, being honest and ethical, invested the money in al-Qaeda, making friends in the process with Osama bin Laden, several sheiks from Saudi Arabia and senior Pakistani intelligence.

Is this a case of the tail wagging the dog or a snake eating its own tail? Whichever it is, the interlocked nature of these organizations certainly gives one enough food for thought. "From its inception, the ARC worked closely with Freedom House, which had been chaired by Leo Cherne since the 1940s, and whose treasurer, Walter Schloss, was a long-time business associate of Train. Cherne was the vice-director of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board with offices at the White House. Cherne's Peshawar-based office was staffed mostly with Hekmatyar's gang."

"The main known financial beneficiaries of ARC were Doctors Without Borders," "founded by Bilderberg's own Bernard Couchner. "This organization, whose most prominent representative was Danielle Mitterrand, wife of President François Mitterrand of France, also received money from the National Endowment for Democracy."

In a bitter irony and delicious example of political double-talk, the organizations supporting dictators, murderers, warlords and corrupt political agendas are the same groups WikiLeaks has been targeting for financial support. Why would that be, if we believe their anti-establishment propaganda? But are they really anti-establishment, and if not who do they work for and what long-sighted agenda do they represent? In this book, we will try to answer all of these questions.

Money for nothing

What remains WikiLeaks' best kept secret is the source of their funding. What is known is that, according to Assange, "the linchpin of WikiLeaks' financial network is Germany's Wau Holland Foundation. ... Mr. Assange said WikiLeaks gets about half its money from modest donations processed by its website, and the other half from 'personal contacts,' including 'people with some millions who approach us....'"

But, that's not their only source of funding. "According to email exchanges, acquiring covert funding from intelligence agencies was also contemplated."

Back in early 2007, when very few people could have imagined that the WikiLeaks circus was coming to town, complete with albino jugglers, three-legged acrobats, belly dancers and a poetry-reciting cyclops, WikiLeaks acknowledged "that the project had been 'founded by Chinese dissidents, mathematicians and startup company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa. ... [Its advisory board] includes representatives from expat Russian and Tibetan refugee communities, reporters, a former US intelligence analyst and cryptographers.'"

Is it me, or is something obviously very fishy about this mix? So, who are some of the key players in the decision making process behind WikiLeaks?

One of the key players on the Board is Philip Adams, who "held key posts in Australian governmental media administration" and contributed to the Times, the Financial Times in London and the New York Times. [Adams worked as a] columnist for the Australian since the 1960s. The Australian is owned by News Corporation, a property of Rupert Murdoch, member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the Bilderberg Group. You could hardly call him anti-establishment. He is the representative of the International Committee of Index on Censorship would it [surprise you to know] that WikiLeaks was awarded the 2008 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression award. How is that for a coincidence?

Another individual associated with WikiLeaks is Ben Laurie, a former security boss of Google, who denied knowledge of his involvement and further stated that "his only substantive interaction with the group was when Assange approached him to help design a system that would protect leakers' anonymity."

Google has been associated with a proprietary investment company run by the CIA, In-Q-Tel, a public face of the National Security Agency, America's most powerful intelligence organization. On February 4, 2010, the Washington Post announced that "The world's largest Internet search company and the world's most powerful electronic surveillance organization are teaming up in the name of cybersecurity." Cyber Security is a large hidden part of the WikiLeaks project, something they would rather you not know anything about. So, one of the people on the board of WikiLeaks comes from this environment.

Furthermore, Ben Laurie is a Director of Open Rights Group, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust Ltd. and the Open Society Foundation. Open Society is funded by George Soros.

"Time magazine has characterized financier George Soros as a 'modern-day Robin Hood,' who robs from the rich to give to the poor countries of eastern Europe and Russia. It claimed that Soros makes huge financial gains by speculating against western central banks, in order to use his profits to help the emerging post-communist economies of eastern Europe and former Soviet Union, to assist them to create what he calls an 'Open Society.' The Time statement is entirely accurate in the first part, and entirely inaccurate in the second. He robs from rich western countries, and uses his profits to rob even more savagely from the East, under the cloak of 'philanthropy.' His goal is to loot wherever and however he can."

What does not pass a smell test is the plethora of Chinese and Tibetan dissidents on WikiLeaks' Advisory Board. For example, one of the Board members is Tashi Namgyal Khamsitsang, a "Tibetan exile & activist" is a former President of the Washington Tibet Association, and a member of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. In July 2010, he was appointed by the Governor of Washington State to the State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.

Another, "Wang Youcai, co-founded the Chinese Democracy Party and a leader of the Tiananmen Square protests. Imprisoned for conspiring to overthrow the Government of China ... he was exiled in 2004 under international political pressure, especially from the United States. He is also a 'member of Chinese Constitutional Democratic Transition Research and a member of the Coordinative Service Platform of the China Democracy Party'"

To most people old enough to have seen it on television, the Tiananmen Square student protests in Beijing in June 1989 are shrouded in the images of CNN and the lonely protester with a shopping bag, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, blocking a column of tanks. But as F. William Engdahl writes, "What few know is that Tiananmen Square in June 1989 was an early attempt of the US intelligence to interfere in the internal affairs of the Peoples' Republic of China and to implement what later came to be called Color Revolutions. Similar Color Revolutions were later run by Washington in Serbia against Milosevic, in Ukraine with the so-called Orange Revolution, Georgia's Rose Revolution and other geopolitical destabilizations aimed at creating Washington-friendly regime changes."
