Composed by Ambrose Bierce, a well-known 19th century author, journalist, and humorist, Bierce wrote the dictionary over several decades, perhaps beginning as early as 1868. THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY was first published in 1911.

Conservative--(noun) A statesman who is enamoured of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others.

About the Author

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1913?) was an American journalist, writer, and humorist. A longtime professional journalist, Bierce became known for his humorous writing, ghost stories, and political commentary. In 1913 at the age of 71, Bierce traveled to Mexico to report on the ongoing Mexican Revolution. He vanished mysteriously after accompanying Pancho Villa's army to Chihuahua.
