Description: This book examines the diagnosis of fungal diseases.
Purpose: The purpose is to review issues in the diagnosis of fungal disease and, in the second part of the book, to provide detailed information about diagnostic techniques for common fungal infections. This is a very useful source of information and it meets the editors' objectives.
Audience: The book is designed to be "useful to laboratorians as well as clinicians of all varieties," and it is appropriate for trainees and practitioners in infectious diseases. The editors are both active investigators in the field.
Features: The first part of the book discusses general issues in fungal disease: assessment of clinical signs and symptoms, the role of radiology, of serodiagnosis, etc. The second part reviews the status of diagnostic testing for many fungal diseases. The coverage appears to be comprehensive. The book could have included more line drawings and tables.
Assessment: This is a useful compendium of information about a topic that is usually only superficially covered in infectious diseases books.
