Directions for Getting Lost: The Spiritual Journey Through the Wilderness of Mental Illness
The impact of mental illness on the spiritual life can be devastating. God often seems absent, or worse, present but indifferent. Mental illness can leave those whose lives are centred around their relationship with God feeling utterly lost and abandoned. Can the mentally ill find spiritual wholeness? Self-help books and pat answers sometimes demean the mentally ill who need to first understand their spiritual struggle with mental illness in order to begin the search for spiritual wholeness.

Directions for Getting Lost: The Spiritual Journey Through the Wilderness of Mental Illness candidly address two states often experienced by mentally ill persons who pursue the spiritual life. The first is the terrible sense of being lost; lost in the sense of losing one's place and belonging in the fellowship of God and God's people. The second state is that of longing to be reconnected to God and community; to be found and to find one's place.

Directions for Getting Lost addresses the questions; Is it possible to live a deep and vibrant spiritual life while contending with the struggles of mental illness? And, Can the mentally ill find spiritual wholeness? Wholeness requires moving through a wilderness experience and learning to embrace our brokenness as essential to full participation in the Kingdom of God. This book seeks to discover the way back to a wholeness rooted in the spiritual journey. Directions for Getting Lost takes the whole discussion of mental illness and spirituality not only in a new direction, but does so with an essential focus not previously applied to the potentially devastating affect mental illness can have on the spiritual life.
