Considering the growing prominence of documentary films in recent years (I read recently that non-fiction titles now make up about 20% of all movies released) it's a wonder that until now there hasn't been a general viewer's guide on this subject. This book fills that void with an easy-to-read anthology format that has almost 350 reviews. Just seeing the partial list of the diverse titles on the book's cover should make a serious film fan want to start reading, then watching. The author has a keen appreciation of the genre's sociological and historical importance. He often emphasizes the dedication of the filmmakers who toil to get these real life stories and vsions up on screen in a film industry that too often seems only concerned with fantasy, action and its own bottom line.
