Description: The publisher claims that this dictionary is the world's best selling medical dictionary.
Purpose: The dictionary is a reference book for medical terminology. Words describing diseases, devices, technologies, generic drugs, trade name drugs, anatomy and chemicals are included in the dictionary. Two other versions are available — international and deluxe.
Audience: The audience would include students in all health science programs including medicine, nursing, and allied health. The book is a reference for anyone who uses or needs to define a medical or health term. The book is produced by an editor and 27 consulting experts from a variety of medical fields. The editor uses a variety of official and standard nomenclatures as guides.
Features: Notes on how to use the dictionary are included in the first section. Fundamentals of medical etymology and an anatomical word list complete the second section. The main section of the book, the vocabulary, contains 121,000 terms that includes over 8,100 new terms and 7,600 new entries, according to the publisher. There are 820 illustrations including 566 new illustrations. The anatomical entries reflect the 1998 Terminologa Anatomica. Medical subject headings (MeSH) are included. The vocabulary includes medical terms, eponyms, and abbreviations with their definitions, pronunciation, and etymology. There are cross references to related terms.
