Overview

The best-seller by sentimental novelist Nicholas Sparks becomes this teen melodrama set in a coastal North Carolina port. Cocky, popular high school student Landon Carter (Shane West) is the big man on campus at Beaufort High School until a hazing incident leaves a fellow student paralyzed. Sentenced to community service and membership in his school's drama club, Landon is forced to seek help from Jamie Sullivan (pop singer Mandy Moore), the conservative, religious, plain-Jane daughter of the town's Baptist minister (Peter Coyote). When the two students begin to fall in love, Landon struggles with the drop in popularity that his new friendship brings, while Jamie is forced to deal with her strict father and a secret that she's keeping from her schoolmates. A Walk to Remember, which co-stars Daryl Hannah, is the second of Sparks's novels to make it to the big screen after Message in a Bottle (1999).

Teen singing sensation Mandy Moore makes a surprisingly effective screen debut in this warm, touching adaptation of the coming-of-age bestseller by Nicholas Sparks. Moore plays Jamie Sullivan, the archetypal clean teen whose reluctance to engage in the morally questionable practices of her fellow high school students makes her something of an outcast. Shane West costars as Landon Carter, the equally archetypal bad boy who only needs the love of a good woman to realize his potential. As you might expect, fate throws them together, and a romance eventually blossoms, but Jamie’s plan for Landon’s reformation gets sidetracked when he once again yearns for the intoxicating approbation of his peers. Moore, whose own image is squeaky clean, seems very much at ease in her role and handles it with aplomb; West is equally comfortable with his character and acquits himself just as well. Peter Coyote contributes a strong supporting turn as Jamie’s stern father (the town preacher, no less), who guards a tragic family secret. Under the direction of Adam Shankman, A Walk to Remember treads familiar ground -- but Moore’s fresh personality puts a little spring in its step. This film eschews the crude sexual hijinks and toilet humor that passes for entertainment value in today’s teen movies; and if you’ve been looking for an uplifting movie that isn't cringe-inducing to watch with your kids, consider the search ended. The DVD sports two commentaries, Moore’s music video of the song "Cry," and the original theatrical trailer.
