Overview

Fall, directed by Scott Mann, tells the story of two daredevil friends who might have bitten off more than they could chew. Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner) live to push themselves through fear, forcing each other beyond their limits for the thrills. But when they climb an abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded 2000 feet in the air with no way down and little hope of rescue. They must use every bit of their climbing skills to overcome the elements, lack of supplies, and dizzying heights for any hope of survival.

Fall is a PG-13 thriller directed and co-written by Scott Mann, with Jonathan Frank sharing the writing duties. The film stars Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Mason Gooding. For having a small cast, this film offers huge, edge-of-your-seat action. In Fall, Becky (Currey), an accomplished climber loses her husband (Gooding) after a tragic mountain climbing accident. Her best friend, Hunter (Gardner) and her father (Morgan) are worried when it seems Becky isn't grieving in a healthy or time-appropriate way. As the one-year anniversary of his death approaches, Hunter decides to pay Becky a visit, but she doesn't show up empty-handed. She arrives with a proposition. What is a healthy way to overcome a newfound fear of climbing and grieving? By climbing a 2,000-foot shaky and nearly decrepit tower. With the benevolent intention of scattering her husband's ashes off the top of the tower, the girls set off. Of course, Hunter intends on filming the entire adventure for her budding YouTube channel. When the rusty ladders collapse leaving the wounded girls on top, they realize that impatient vultures, heatstroke, and starvation aren't the only things they have to contend with. Their friendship is put to the test as secrets are revealed. While the main conflict is one of adrenaline-pumping thrills and terror, the underlying conflict filled with toxic relationships is an interesting and unexpected twist. Peer pressure, manipulation, emotional abuse, and selfishness take center stage on the emotional front as the girls wait for any sign of help. It feels like an anti-Rapunzel movie. When the girls are in a difficult position of being stuck on a tower and needing to ask an outside source for help, they don't merely sit there and wait for help to come along. They are not typical damsels-in-distress. Most of the "princes" who come along not only fail to help them; some even try to take advantage of the situation. The girls are forced to solve their problems using clever ingenuity and physical prowess. Currey and Gardner do a tremendous job of making the terror and heartbreak feel real. From the beginning, it may be hard for moviegoers with mountain climbing experience to suspend their disbelief. There is no use of chalk or gloves in the movie at all (also rope burn doesn't seem to exist in this world). For a suspenseful horror thriller set in real life, it is difficult to believe what is happening when the characters make decisions that are physically improbable. Jumping across a chimney into the arms of someone else who is also holding onto the rock face is… unrealistic. The last third of the movie is engrossing and truly moving. While some of it might seem obvious to those who have been paying close attention, the execution is spot-on and well-worth the wait. If audiences were captivated by the trailer, seeing the movie in the theater is worth it for the sheer experience of being terrified by the dizzying heights. The B story is wanting with the redemption arc feeling somewhat selfish and self-serving. If viewers can get past that, the thrill and excitement is worth a movie ticket. Also, enjoy the irony of watching the main characters talk about "clickbait" in a film produced in part by Buzzfeed Productions.
