Overview

Jimmy Yu Wang (billed simply as Yu Wang) directs and stars in the Cantonese-language One-Armed Boxer, also released as The One-Armed Boxer and the Flying Guillotine. Wang plays the physically challenged but totally self-sufficient master of a colorful martial arts school. His principal antagonist is the sight-impaired Master of the Flying Guillotine. In the film's climax, Wang's students square off against the villain's disciples. The sequel to One-Armed Boxer carries two titles: One-Armed Boxer II and Master of the Flying Guillotine.

The One Armed Boxer is a great example of how to apply the maxim "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" to filmmaking. Simply put, director/writer/star Wang Yu simply takes the most notable plot hooks of his two biggest hits -- The One Armed Swordsman and The Chinese Boxer -- and combines them into one stripped-down juggernaut of non-stop fights and comic-book lunacy. Serious cineastes are likely to be baffled by the film's no-frills approach to character and plot but The One Armed Boxer was not made for them. Indeed, this film is aimed squarely at the most basic needs of the kung-fu film fans: easily identified heroes and villains, exotic fighting techniques and a steady stream of knock-down, drag-out fights. The end result is often crude and often silly enough to make even the most tolerant b-movie fan role his eyes (example: the villainous Japanese fighter actually has vampire-style fangs) but the mix of constant action and go-for-broke lunacy will keep exploitation movie fans glued to the screen. In short, The One Armed Boxer is a fun blast of no-frills action craziness for any viewer in the proper schlock-loving mood.
