Edge of Apocalypse (End Series #1) by Tim LaHaye, Craig Parshall

Joshua Jordan, former U.S. spy-plane hero now turned weapons designer has come up with a devastatingly effective new missile defense system – the Return to Sender laser weapon. But global forces are mounting against America, and corrupt White House and Capitol Hill leaders are willing to do anything to stop the nation’s impending economic catastrophe – including selling-out Joshua and his weapon. As world events begin setting the stage for the “end of days,” Joshua is forced to consider not only the truth of the biblical prophecies preached by the pastor of his brilliant attorney- wife, but also what gut-wrenching price he is willing to pay to save the nation he loves.

I had the privilege of interviewing Tim LaHaye & Craig Parshall, on our radio show "Kingdom Highlights", for their new book, "Edge Of Apocalypse" published by Zondervan. This book is a thriller from the first word and gets more exciting word by word. Unlike a previous series by Dr. LaHaye this series is set not to far from where we are today. Dr. LaHaye is using Bible prophecy to show how close we are to what the Bible tells us will happen. Nations will rise against nations and the United States is in deep trouble due to a severe drought and economic collapse. Due to a series of events Joshua Jordan, creator of the missile defense system code-named Return To Sender, is forced to use it without Washington approval. Now foreign nations want to steal it and the U. S. Government is pressuring Jordan to turn over his designs so that, secretly, they could sell it. Criag Parshall, known for his legal fiction, has written a page turning, heart-thumping thriller with careful attention to the state of the world right now and how the Bible says we will turn out. Many of the "things" that are mentioned in the book are in place right now and in use, even though most of us are not aware of them. Dr. LaHaye and Craig Parshall have one agenda in mind and that is the salvation of many through this work of fiction. Their zeal is that many will have their eyes open to the state of our world and see that much of where we are currently and where we are poised to go the Bible has already warned us of and that we would understand our need for a savior. They do a truly remarkable job in this book while exciting us with this story that everyone will enjoy. When I asked them where we would be headed in the next book they told me that they could not tell me that butt that this series is envisioned as a trilogy with the next one due out next year. I can hardly wait!!! If you missed the interview for "Edge Of Apocalypse" and would like to listen to it please go to www.kingdomhighlights.org where it is available On Demand. I was a little disappointed in this book. I have previously read the Left Behind series and liked that series, but I'll have to say that I felt this book wasn't up to the same level as the Left Behind books. I have noticed that sometimes in a series, the author will kind of stretch out the action and let the plot move slowly--to fill more pages and make more money, I suppose. I'm not saying that's the motive here, but I felt things were just dragging a bit. According to Lahaye's website, this book is going to be the first book in a series, so I am already kind of on the fence about buying the next one, if it is going to move slowly like this one does. My problem is that I really, really wanted to like it, I was looking for a great end-times novel. I'm not sure how much of the writing here is Tim Lahaye's and how much is co-author Craig Parshall's. Overall, its not a terrible book, I probably will buy the next one in hopes that it picks up a little bit. The characters are like-able enough, the plot is OK, so if you are into this type of fiction, give it a shot.

This is the first of his books I have read. The book started strong and then went flat. I finally gave up and did not finish it. There are to many other writers to choose from.

This is a good read. Very different from the Left Behind Series, but has the makings of another good series of books. It is somewhat thought provoking, and the characters are really good. I would really recommend this book.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading but Mr LaHaye really does a wonderful job of sucking you into the characters. This book hits you right aways and doesn't stop.

Joshua Jordan was a hero taking unbelievable chances with his life for the country he loved. When he retired from field work he became a weapon designer trying to still protect the United States from threats outside and inside the nation. In the Atlantic, a North Korean boat has nuclear missiles aboard. Due to failed communication with his superiors at home, the admiral launches the weapons a Two of the missiles head towards New York City; Jordan has minutes to activate the Return to Sender laser guidance system that sends a missile back to its launch site. The counter operation proves successful, but the media questions the consequences while the White House and Senate demand he turn over the Return to Sender system to Senator Stratworth and his committee. When he refuses to give it to anyone outside of the Pentagon as he fears anyone else will sell it for oil and credit. The President and Congress use the media to go after Joshua. Joshua soon learns he might be a target as Iran, North Korea and Russia as well as allies want the system and will go to any length to get it. Taking place in the near future in which America is short on cash as a new growing dust bowl threatens Midwest agriculture, corruption permeates the government, Joshua and two secret cabals try to bring back the country to what is once was. Tim LaHaye and Craig Parshall provides readers with an exciting thriller as the United Sates is on the Edge of Apocalypse while the hero must deal with the possibility of biblical Armageddon and saving his nation. This is another star in the cap for Tim LaHaye! The book captured my attention from the beginning all the way through to the end. How many Americans find their inovation & inventiveness begin to work against them either through red tape or roadblocks?

I enjoyed reading this book and was never disappointed in having purchased it. I have several of this Author's books and have begun to collect them for future use and presents to give to family and friends. The Author always writes and touches on subjects that provoke my imagination and sparks my interests in future events. I like this Authors interpretation of what life may be like under certain circumstances and conditions. The plot and actualization of the events in this book are true to the title and mirror the society we are becoming. This is a "Must Read" book.

Edge of Apocalypse is based on fictional characters in a very real prophetic scenario based on the book of Revelation. The story goes at mach speed from cover to cover and keeps you locked in as you discover the truth about Bible Prophesies that are actually taking place now. This is the first book in a series called the End series that will take you through the final outcome of God's plan for our lives. Tim LaHaye is the author of the Left Behind Series that sold 65 million copies detailing The Rapture to Armageddon and God's Judgment of man. This is a great book, not only for Christians, but for those who seeking God and his will for your life.

I enjoy all of his books. This one started out at a pretty fast pace, but started dragging a little bit toward the end. I did not care for the ending at all. I can only hope there will a follow up book to answer some of the questions left hanging at the end.

The author has done a great job of presenting a story that reflects the world of politics as it is today. There is plenty of action and does a great job of developing the main character as a true American and the supporting characters as the political and corrupt villans they are in real life. May be too close to the world that actually exists today. A book that is hard to put down and great for use on a Nook. Another great novel by Tim LaHaye.

Edge of Apocalypse Review Edge of Apocalypse, by Tim Lahaye and Craig Parshall, is a story in which Joshua Jordan’s life seems to be falling apart all around him once he uses his RTS system is used. The genre is science fiction as this is placed in some time in the future with new technology. The point of view in the book is Third person limited as we are only aware of Joshua’s thoughts and feeling throughout the story. Joshua Jordan, is the protagonist, he’s a former spy-plane hero that now designs weapons, he doesn’t like opera or going to church (Ask about all characters). The story is set a couple years in future when there’s a cellphone which can do anything a computer can, also everything in the U.S. has gone digital everything is on the internet new, newspaper, and TV, all except money. One theme I drew from reading the book was that the government is corrupt, as he doesn’t want is his RTS system sold to the highest bidder because it can land in the wrong hands. Joshua Jordan shows this by avoiding the law, “Hears the drill. I’m going to avoid being served the subpoena. Go into hiding if I have to.” (249). North Korea had jamming beacons which were being taken out by south/U.S. forces, this agitated a north Korean admiral how acted rashly and launched two nukes at Manhattan, NY. As they headed there Joshua Jordan received a call of the incoming missile the untested RTS system was used. The white house was angered as it claimed to not have approved the use of the weapon. Joshua refused to turn in the papers of the design of the weapon, the government was not happy and went after him. A hired foreign assassin was sent from a powerful person to retrieve the designs at all costs. The killer then captures Joshua’s son, Cal, and asks for the designs of the weapon. Towards the end Joshua sees the government isn’t doing anything but target him after he’s proven he’s a hero. When compared to other books in the science fiction genre such as, The Maze Runners, Joshua Jordan thinks thing through clearly and prepares for any possible thing that could happen. Thomas on the other hand doesn’t think things through that much he just does it spontaneously. Thomas just rushed into the maze in the thought of saving the two people in the maze not thinking threw how he was going to do it which could have cost all their lives. On other hand Joshua thought things through very carefully to make sure his son wouldn’t get hurt. I give this book an 8 out of 10 stars because of how into detail it goes on into on the realistic facts in the plot such like with North Korea. I recommend this book people who like a very realistic science fiction book that goes into detail, though there are some deaths involved so I recommend it to be read by kids middle school or older.
