The non-stop flight from New York to San Diego was in its third hour, a little over half way to their destination.
An angry-looking man with a thick black mustache and dressed in a black sweat suit looked over across the aisle. Sitting in the opposite seat was a man also dressed in black sweat suit. This man looked frightened and his forehead dripped sweat. The lenses of his glasses were fogging up on the end of his nose. The nervous man gripped the arm rests tightly and took short heavy breaths.
The angry man stared at the nervous man until he caught his attention. The angry man nodded to him in a signal that the nervous man did not want to see. The angry man then peered over the edge of his seat at the man seated two rows back of the nervous man. A well-dressed man in a business suit and tie looked back at the angry man. The well-dressed man had a similar angry look, the two probably could have been brothers. The angry man nodded to the well-dressed man, who nodded back.
Well-dressed man stood up and walked toward the front of the airplane cabin, right up to the flight attendants' station. He said something about wondering if he could have more coffee. The blond-haired stewardess at the station smiled and told him that he could have just rung his call bell and she would have come back to him. Well-dressed man politely said to her, "I'm sorry, I just think it's rude to ring a bell. Besides, it's nice to get up once in a while and stretch ones legs."
The stewardess turned and grabbed the pot of coffee from the burner. She poured some of the freshly-brewed coffee into a Styrofoam cup for the passenger. As she turned back to him, the well-dressed man pressed a sharp blade to the belly of her dress shirt.
"Don't say anything," well-dressed man said. "Just set the coffee down and do exactly as I say."
The stewardess did as she was told. It took all of her strength not to scream or even cry. She had never had a sharp object held to her in a threatening manner like this before. She had no idea what to do. Before her mind could figure anything out, she saw one of the passengers walk up behind the well-dressed man. A wave of relief fell over her as she hoped that this man would help her out. But when she saw this approaching passenger's face, she did not feel relief anymore. This man wore an angry expression on his face.
