About the Author

Moncure Daniel Conway (1832-1907) was an American abolitionist, clergyman, and author associated with the transcendentalists.  His antislavery views made him anathema in his native Virginia.  After the outbreak of the Civil War, he rescued many of his father's slaves and wrote books and articles pleading for emancipation. He was ultimately estranged from America because of his pacifist views and spent many years in England and France.
