You should be prepared with information when the Mormon missionaries come knocking; the image the LDS Church paints of itself does not reflect the true countenance of its character.

Mormons have a limited understanding of their own religion. The LDS church goes to great lengths to suppress history that is not faith promoting; they have even modified it to make it less troubling. They discourage members from reading material they deem inappropriate.

Because of this kind of politic, church members are taught a very simplified, sanitized, and inaccurate version of history. When they read a book such as this (exposing some of what really happened), they lash out in proclaiming it to be ‘Lies, and Anti-Mormon Propaganda.’

Contained within these pages are direct quotations from a variety of LDS leaders, relatives, and friends from its nearly 200 year old beginnings.

The faithful Church member must firmly believe in (and vigorously defend) the founder of the religion, Joseph Smith (author of the ‘Book of Mormon’), and agree that the faith is the “one and only true church” in the world; as well as understand that no one can enter heaven without Joseph Smith’s permission.

LDS apostle Orson Pratt made a challenge in this manner: “If, after a rigid examination, it be found an imposition, it should be extensively published to the world as such; the evidences and arguments on which the imposture was detected, should be clearly and logically stated, that those who have been sincerely yet unfortunately deceived, may perceive the nature of the deception and be reclaimed, and that those who continue to publish the delusion, may be exposed and silenced…”

Among Joseph Smith’s virtues are some other attributes: Liar, Thief, Magician, Extortionist, Polygamist, Despot, Bigamist, Adulterer, Philanderer, Convict, Fugitive, Plagiarist, Treasure Hunter, Drinker, Smoker, Statutory Rapist, Illusionist, Fabricator, Racist, Manipulator, and Misogynist. He was also Polyandrous, Hallucinative, Delusional, Controlling, and most of the time he acted entirely above the law. There is also compelling evidence to suggest Joseph Smith used mushrooms and alcohol to produce the visions he claims to have had; as well as the joint hallucinations some of his followers experienced.

One might wonder if these characteristics are worthy of a close friend, much less those of a man claiming to be the prophet of God’s only true religion.

Unfortunately, Joseph Smith may have been a ‘Saint’ compared to the man who succeeded him (though unauthorized as such), Brigham Young.

The evidence in this book (nearly 800 pages; accompanied by more than 2,500 footnotes) is clear. Regardless of attempts by the LDS Church to paint this criminal (Joseph Smith) in a favorable light by changing history, and smiling too often; it is finally time to follow through with Orson Pratt’s wise admonition.

As of this writing, active Mormon Republicans Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney are vying for the high honor of the Presidency of the United States of America in the next election. Mormons are convinced this would be a fulfillment of one of Joseph Smith’s prophesies.

About the Author

Dan Wees is a native of Santa Cruz, CA. As a young participant in a wide variety of Christian/Protestant churches he ultimately explored the LDS (Mormon) Church as a teenager. Eager to become affiliated, he quickly contacted the missionaries and was baptized shortly thereafter. This was the beginning of a twenty-one year odyssey of very active membership.

An abrupt family relocation to Minnesota thrust him into the arms of a sparse, but far more dedicated number of LDS faithful. The round trip drive to Church was about 90 miles which he did twice a week for three years. Additionally, his Home Teaching route (visiting assigned families) tacked on at least 300 miles to his odometer each month. He became the wards’ youngest Elders Quorum priesthood teacher (a group of 18-40 year olds) at the age of seventeen; before he was ordained an Elder in the Melchizedek (higher) Priesthood.

With a late teenage urge to be closer to the saints, and a desire to serve a mission, he left his family in Minnesota to move to Utah. Within less than a year he had broken off an engagement, scraped the idea of a mission, and married his wife, Laura, in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. They have four children.

Dan worked at Deseret Book (the largest Mormon bookstore) in a variety of capacities and settled as a supervisor in charge of reading lesser LDS titles/submissions to determine their appropriateness for the shelves.

He received a variety of callings within the Church (the highest being in the Bishopric as a Ward Clerk) and attended the temple(s) in the Salt Lake City area more than 400 times from 1980-1997. “Family Home Evening” (Monday night study) and/or regular scripture study became expected in their home.

He began questioning his faith around 1995 and decided to leave Mormonism in 1997. His wife is a traditional Utah Mormon with both Pioneer and Polygamist histories. As of this writing she is still active in the LDS Church.

Their children have all been baptized; two of which received the Aaronic (lesser) Priesthood. An informal meeting with his four children was held to describe his decision; with a strict admonition that he would not attempt to influence their feelings about the religion; which was honored. All four are currently inactive in the faith, and Dan is the only one who has had his name officially removed from the records of the Church.
