Description: Endoscopic and key hole cranial base surgery textbook has a unique approach to the surgical anatomy and technique of the approaches to lesions of the skull base as well as an in depth discussion on the indications, advantages and disadvantages of different strategies for lesions that could be treated with conventional open skull base approaches as well as minimal invasive and endoscopic approaches.
Purpose: In these times of change in the treatment paradigm for deep-seated brain lesions and lesions affecting the base of the skull, it is of paramount importance to collect the different possible strategies and compare them, discuss the potential benefits of each approach and strategy, and indicate potential recommendations for each case. The authors most certainly meet this objective, which makes this book really needed.
Audience: The audience for this book is residents with an interest in skull base surgery as well as fellows and neurosurgeons/ENT surgeons involved in the treatment of deep seated and skull base lesions. The senior authors are recognized authorities in the field, and they have collected contributions from leaders in the treatment of these lesions.
Features: The first of the book's three sections discusses the pathology treated with endoscopic endonasal approaches. The second section features keyhole approaches to intracranial lesions. The third section, which gives this title added value compared to other books, focuses on different challenging pathologies, which are discussed in depth by experts who evaluate the different therapeutic options to guide readers in the choice of treatment strategies if faced with these lesions. This is a welcome addition to the body of existing literature on the topic of skull base surgery.
Assessment: This book complements well such titles as Controversies in Skull Base Surgery, Little and Mahoney (Thieme, 2019), where "hot topics" are debated and dissected to help clarify some of the existing controversies in treatment strategies. The focus of this book is primarily on the nuances of the different surgical strategies. Perhaps a future edition could add some multidisciplinary strategies to provide useful guidance for these challenging lesions from all aspects of care. Unfortunately, the book has been produced in a way that prevents readers from fully enjoying the intraoperative pictures, many of which are of a size that makes it difficult to fully appreciate the intricacies of the anatomy and pathology at hand.
