Overview

Democracy is crumbling in the Interstellar Dominion Electorates and the LORDS party are preparing a coup. If Dar and Samantha can't get their message to Terra in time, a dictatorship is inevitable. What's more, every police ship in space has just been alerted that Dar and Samantha are dangerous telepaths to be shot on sight.

Along the way, they meet up with a colorful cast of characters who join their quest: a tech-savvy monk, a wandering poet, and a wealthy medieval reenactor, to name just a few. Suspense and adventure abound as Dar and friends are chased through the galaxy as they race to save the world from itself.

About the Author

Christopher Stasheff teacher, thespian, techie, and author of science fiction & fantasy novels. One of the pioneers of "science fantasy," his career spans four decades, 44 novels (including translations into Czech, German, Italian, Russian, and Japanese), 29 short stories, and seven 7 anthologies. His novels are famous for their humor (and bad puns), exploration of comparative political systems, and philosophical undertones.

He has always had difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality and has tried to compensate by teaching college. When teaching proved too real, he gave it up in favor of writing full time. He tends to pre-script his life, but can't understand why other people never get their lines right. This causes a fair amount of misunderstanding with his wife and four children. He writes novels because it's the only way he can be the director, the designer, and all the actors too.

Stasheff's portrayal of our future society left me feeling intrigued, a bit shocked, and not a little disturbed. In this "prequel" of his Warlock series, we find mankind spread out amongst the stars, complacent in their general state of uncaring ignorance and comfortably opulent lives while our ailing democratic government spirals dramatically towards self-destruction. Clever, insightful, frighteningly relevant, "Escape Velocity" teaches as it entertains and is a wonderful addition to the genre.

Readers will chuckle when learning of the original exploits of Dar Mandra on Planet Wolmar and beyond; his well-paced and fun plots provide a fine escape for fantasy readers. The incongruity is the most appealing aspect of Stasheff's series. Set five centuries before readers first glimpsed the Warlock universe, Stasheff creates a history that answers a multitude of sociological questions and raises just as many personal ones.
