Description: This book addresses many ethical issues in mental healthcare. Although the title indicates a community focus, this book goes beyond community psychiatry, including academic psychiatry, forensics, and even family and personal rights issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the thoughts of providers and consumers about mental health ethical issues. This is a different and needed book, which provides the experiences of others with these issues.
Audience: The book's audience is not entirely clear from the preface, but it has wide appeal. All people working, living with, or related to the mentally ill could benefit from reading this book. The authors of each chapter range from prominent experts in ethics and/or mental illness, to consumers of mental health services.
Features: This book picks out some of the major areas of ethical debate in the mental health field. From the pharmaceutical companies' influence on the provider, to the issue of violence in the home, each area is well developed. The most unique and useful feature of this book is the case examples scattered throughout each chapter. The index is also very useful because it includes summary sentences to explain what each chapter is about. A few chapters seem to leave the reader hanging. The dilemmas are highlighted, but little space is given to the current and past positions on these dilemmas in a minority of chapters.
Assessment: This was a very interesting and thought provoking book. Any ethics discussion in mental health could use the example alone for exploration. lf you turn to the book looking for answers to these ethical dilemmas, you will be disappointed. However, as far as sparking interest and discussion in the various areas of ethics in mental healthcare, this book provides an excellent starting point.
