Description: This book on exercise testing truly is a practical guide. The appendixes are full of ready-to-use risk factor assessment questionnaires, informed consent forms, and exercise test data sheets. t is a well-organized, concise reference for the field of exercise testing.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist health professionals not traditionally trained in exercise testing and interpretation to gather and use useful exercise data to enhance patient care and/or performance. This guide is a practical, easy-to-read complement to many previously published textbooks that include complex, detailed information. The authors successfully achieve their objective.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for health professionals, including cardiologists, pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and exercise physiologists, as well as medical and post-graduate students. The authors have succeeded in hitting the target audience and conveying knowledge at an appropriate level.
Features: This book gives a good, well-rounded view of exercise testing and interpretation, from the basic equipment needed to perform an exercise test, to the usefulness of various protocols, as well as providing good explanations for both the mathematical and physiological significance of the data interpretation. The authors do an excellent job of presenting one set of terms, symbols, and definitions for many basic exercise physiology concepts, and they provide an appendix of tables illustrating reference values for many of the tests. Neither of these sections is commonly found in other books, thereby making this one an indispensable resource for the field.
Assessment: This guide is more practical and easier to use than other books that are good references, yet are not nearly as organized and concise. This is a useful and worthwhile addition to the library of any health or exercise professional looking for good basic information in a clear, organized, and concise format.
