THEY WENT to the hospital, took care of business, and sat with Milo for a few hours. His mother stroked his forehead and hair, his lover held his wrist and hand in both of hers.
"Milo�s father was ill many times, the first time it was serious, Milo was still small, age seven. We didn�t have the money for a hospital or even for a doctor. So we did our best for him ourselves. And we did well, until he suddenly got worse and was steadily getting more worse, and nothing we did worked anymore.
�My husband�s brother was furious with us. Saying we were callously killing him, because we�re �too cheap and believing in witch doctoring.� But he was just terrified and didn�t have any money either. While we argued, Milo slipped away without any of us noticing. By the time we were done shouting the house down, it must have been at least an hour. Maybe almost two even.
�I went to check on my husband and found my little son there, lying quietly in the crook of his father�s arm. Both apparently sleeping until Milo sensed I was there. Then told me..." Emilia�s eyes suddenly leveling with Thalia�s. "'Dad's going to be all right tomorrow, 'Ma."
"And?" Thalia asked, not noticing that she was leaning towards Emilia.
"The following day, my husband was walking around the house for the first time in three days; but my son was so ill he couldn�t sit up, let alone leave his bed. I was terrified. After a couple of days though, he was fine and out running and chasing his cousin, Harry. That's when we knew for certain that my little boy had something special in him.�
Thalia felt a tingle and a bit of apprehension. Her mouth went dry and she could barely swallow as she though: that was exactly what he�d done with me, over and over. Wasn�t it?
