Overview

Sofia is a privileged, headstrong Italian teenager who longs to break free of her repressive parents and attend medical school. She reluctantly accedes to their insistence that she travel a different course, and begins a life of adventure and misadventure that takes her to London, Rome, Naples, Sydney and Geneva - from falling in love with a dashing Italian "physician" to periods of debt and deprivation, from glorious highs to crippling illness and despair. At every stop in her journey, Sofia faces difficult choices, but no matter how challenging the voyage, she fares on, sometimes thoughtfully, sometimes impetuously, to the journey's end.

About the Author

Gabriella Cantoni was born in Torino, Italy. She moved to America in 1966. She was educated in local convents and completed three years of Medical School in Italy. She worked at NIH for 18 years and currently is a docent at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. She lives in Chevy Chase, MD.
