Prayer has always been a part of my life. Whether it takes the form of asking for a favor, begging for mercy and forgiveness, pleading for relief, giving thanks for a wonderful joy, grieving a loss, or just thinking and meditating and talking casually with God, I have always found prayer to be relaxing, comforting, and a blessing. More than that, prayer is powerful. That does not mean that I always or even often get what I pray for (unless it is peace of mind, which prayer does always offer me). But there is great power in prayer.
When my wife was in hospice, prayer was a great comfort to her. Eden enjoyed praying the Rosary. But when she became too weak to say the prayers, I joined her. I would read the prayers, and she would add the "Amen's." And when she became too weak to even do that, I said the "Amen's," too. But those Rosaries gave her such peace, and pain relief, it was really almost miraculous. Dying of cancer, and wracked with pain, the calm on her face during our Rosary prayers surpassed even the relief of morphine.
Prayer has the power to transform. It gets you in touch, and keeps you in tune, with your feelings, your beliefs, your priorities, your needs and wants – and your God.
Much of the contents of this book has already appeared online in one of my blogs or social sharing sites. I share a lot online, and this is really just another attempt to share, but on a wider scale, while in a more concise form.
I was raised a Presbyterian, went to a Pentecostal church, confirmed in the Episcopal church, then went 20 years without darkening the door of any church, and finally joined the Roman Catholic church.
So, here, you'll find prayers and blessings and quotes and verses from a diverse, yet common, background. It's all based on a belief in God: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
It is my hope that you will find some comfort and peace in these pages.
