Brought to you by OBS reviewer Dawn I have to begin with the book cover – love it!! The visual of a witch doctor is perfect and creepy. Andy Biggs is attending a baseball camp for pitching. He is determined to strike out his nemesis, Spevik, but some weird stuff starts happening. First, Andy thinks he sees a ghost and the hair on his neck stands up. Andy enlists his friends Juan and Melvin to help find out what’s going on. They research the detailed history of the ballpark and realize it was used by monks a long time ago. I loved the Native American history mixed with monks. The history added a deeper level to the plot and the characters’ struggles. There are some really funny moments throughout the book. Juan is a pistol, he’s sarcastically funny. Melvin is a nerd but he brings a lot to the table. They come up with a half-baked plan to save the world but as usual it doesn’t go as planned. Andy listens to his intuition and bravely fights for his friends. He finds an unusual ally as he faces the witch doctor. I really felt for Andy as he described the difficulty adjusting to his new step-dad. Whether you want to revisit familiar characters or read it as a stand-alone, it’s a good story. Field of Screams is a perfect Young Adult book with wholesome values. I used to be a nanny for 3 boys and we would pick books to read and discuss. This is a great book for fathers and sons. The book appeals to all ages, boys and girls. I think it would be a great holiday gift for nieces, nephews, even your own children. This review and more at openbooksociety dot com
