Description: This is a terrific desk reference on the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of fetal abnormalities, with an accompanying website with an ebook version.
Purpose: The book relies on the authors' clinical experience to provide a reference on first trimester anomalies. The images are crisp and easy to follow. The use of cartoon images adjacent to pictures helps with the presentation.
Audience: The audience includes obstetricians/gynecologists, radiologists, and residents who deal with first trimester issues. Maternal-fetal medicine physicians also would benefit.
Features: This is an excellent resource on first trimester imaging. The material is ideally suited for directed reading as opposed to chronological reading; it is essentially is an ultrasound anatomical reference. Images are easy to follow and the use of color and cartoons really helps with interpretation. Chapters are broken down into body systems, such as gastrointestinal or CNS, for example. They describe what is normal and then provide a differential diagnosis for abnormal findings. Two chapters are devoted to technical aspects. I would have appreciated some comments on ectopic pregnancy. Although it can be considered a gynecology issue, it is a pregnancy-related complication and could be covered in a book such as this. That is a small quibble because, overall, this is an excellent book with fantastic images.
Assessment: This is a fantastic book on first trimester obstetric imaging with current references.
