The book presents an easy to use guide to plants of BGSB University Campus, situated on the hillocks of Dhanore on northeast of Rajouri, being overlooked by majestically high mountain summits of the Pir Panjal Himalayan range. After providing a lucid prologue about the University †its location, physiography, climate and vegetation. the book deals with gamut of plants that adorn the curiously undulate landscape of Campus, dressing its ambiance in charismatic green. Overall, 390 plant species, spread over 306 genera in 115 families, are inventoried and lucidly described. Pteridophytes are represented by 18 species in 14 genera and 09 families, gymnosperms by 11 species in 10 genera and 08 families, whereas angiosperms include 361 species in 282 genera and 98 families. For each species contained in the book is provided its botanical name followed by authority citation, first publication, synonym(s) if any, diagnostic morphological characterization, flowering period, distribution, and voucher number of specimen(s) examined. For many species, their common/local names and notes on utility are also appended. Colour photographs are provided for most of the species to facilitate their easy identification. Subsequent to taxonomic analysis of flora is given the biological spectrum, deciphering life forms of the included species. A timely publication, the book will be quite useful to students, research scholars and teachers of botany, as well as to people visiting the University. In particular, it would be of wide interest to the whole family of BGSB University, more so to those working in life science departments. "

About the Author

Professor Ghulam Hassan Dar is presently working as Director Centre for Biodiversity Studies and Dean School of Biosciences & Biotechnology, BGSB University Rajouri (Jammu & Kashmir), having until recently held the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Chair on Ecology and Environment in this University. Prior to this, he worked as Head of the Department of Botany at University of Kashmir, Srinagar. An eminent plant taxonomist, Prof. Dar is widely known for his significant research contributions to the biodiversity of Kashmir Himalaya. A Fellow of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (FIAT), he has been awardee of the Prof Y D Tyagi Gold Medal, the international fellowship of Danish Natural Science Council Denmark, and the Scientist Emeritus fellowships of University Grants Commission, New Delhi and Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata. In 38 years of his illustrious teaching and research career, Prof. Dar has to his credit 184 publications (10 books/profiles + 112 papers + 60 abstracts + 2 brochures) and has supervised 25 Ph. D. and M. Phil. scholars. Having completed several research and consultancy projects sponsored by various Indian and foreign funding agencies, he has attended more than 40 national and international conferences/seminars. A member of many international and national academic/scientific societies and of Executive Council of Jammu & Kashmir State Council on Climate Change, Prof Dar has described for the first time ten plant species that are new to science. In pursuit of research and academic collaboration, Dr. Dar has visited many countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Austria, United Kingdom, and Pakistan.



Nisar Ahmed Malik is a young man, having passed M.Sc. Botany, with specialization in plant taxonomy. He worked as JRF in Mahatma Gandhi Chair on Ecology & Environment at BGSB University, Rajouri, for a period of about three years. He has published 3 research papers and also passed his B. Ed. Recently, he has joined as teacher in the Education Department of J & K State.
