Overview

The Forest Finns are a very unique group of people who emigrated from Finland to Sweden in about 1600, and many of them emigrated from Sweden to the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century. People with ancestors in Värmland Province, Sweden, might be surprised to know that their ancestors could have been Finnish.
Virginia Mattson-Schultz writes about the history, culture, and language of the Forest Finns and gives advice on finding these Finnish Swedes, even to finding their original Finnish surnames. She also suggests ways to enjoy this new-found culture.

About the Author

Virginia Mattson-Schultz has been interested in genealogy since she was in her twenties and has spent many years researching her own family history, and working both as a professional genealogist for others and a high school foreign language teacher. Her Forest Finn roots, which encouraged her study of the Finnish culture in the middle of Sweden, and her strong background in languages combine to make her uniquely qualified to write this book. She has also written articles for The Finnish American Reporter and the journals Arran and Baiki.
She grew up in Trempealeau, Wisconsin, and earned a B.A. from Macalester College and master’s degree from the University of Colorado. She currently lives in Martinsburg, West Virginia, with her husband David and their golden retriever Sunny.
