About the Author

Col. Thomas F. Berry (1832-1917) was a war veteran of seven years, including the War between the States.

A native of Kentucky, he later lived in Oklahoma. While serving with General John Hunt Morgan’s famous command, Col. Berry was captured by the Union forces and confined at Rock Island, Illinois. During the last year of the war he escaped and made his way back South, where he joined Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Following the surrender at Appomattox, Col. Berry, with hundreds of other Confederate soldiers, refused to surrender, but instead went to Mexico. He then went to South America and served in various armies, and with the American forces during the Boxer War in China.

Col. Berry was later prominently connected with the Oklahoma Division, U.C.V., and became a surgeon of the Oklahoma City Brigade in 1916.

He died in Oklahoma City on December 24, 1917.
