Sometimes people come into a person's life and make their heart skip a beat.

Those people are called cops.

Well, one cop in particular.

A SWAT officer for the Kilgore Police Department, to be specific.

The first time Avery Flynn saw Derek Roberts, she was photographing him for the first annual Kilgore Police Department SWAT calendar. He was leaned back in his squad car, shirtless, and giving her a smile that was completely between them. A smile that hinted at what he wanted to do to her later.

When she scrounges up the courage to ask him out after the photoshoot, he laughs in her face.

Well, screw you, too, Mr. February.

Derek Roberts never really paid attention to the photographer.

She was a mousy girl who dressed like a twelve-year-old girl. Her tight leggings, extra baggy Star Trek t-shirt denoting her a Klingon captain, and her surprisingly clean Chucks didn't leave much of an impression.

Now, the outfit that she was in weeks after he rebuffed her? Yeah, now that caught his attention.

Too bad that happens when he's trying to save her from what's sure to be death thanks to an unhinged native Texan who's convinced she was the reason he lost his last chance at a million dollars.

When he tries to save her, she tells him she'd rather take a cattle prod to the forehead than go anywhere with him.

Challenge. Accepted.

What a great book! I was crying before I could get through the first chapter. The things happening to Avery were heart wrenching. The hospital hallway scene with her mother will remain in my mind a long time. So glad that this author believes in happily ever after endings! Thanks for another great read.

Love it. Can't wait for the next one. Plus now I'd really love a book on Lynn aka S***** aka J****. He keeps popping up in your books like Silas and Steel did. Love reading about the next generations. This series ties in perfectly with the calendar. Thanks.

Initially I wasn’t too keen on hot cop SWAT officer Derek Robert aka Mr. February, particularly since he was such a jerk to photographer Avery Flynn. Weeks later Derek is tasked with saving Avery despite her protests. This was a roller coaster of a read with my heart almost breaking for Avery at times and tears were shed. Avery has been through do much that I wanted to scream, I could feel her pain. It also covers the issue of bullying and the devastating affects it can have on a person. Avery was such a strong young woman that I greatly admired. Derek grew on me, he was certainly an alpha male who was also fiercely protective of Avery. I think that was what finally turned my opinion around. There were times that I laughed, I cried, I wanted to scream but through it all I was invested in Derek and Avery’s story. The chemistry between them sizzled and I was cheering them on to get their happily ever after.

This book reads so fast before you know it is over, it's over. I do wish all of her books were about 100 pages longer. I also wish that every book didn't have a hateful woman/ high school psycho girl in it. Or hateful guy. She needs to start branching out of this theme for her die hard readers. I love her writing style since it moves so quick for me.

Even though the story was great it did miss a few things her books normally encompass however not to say it was worth the read

Another slam dunk by Lani Lynn Vale! I'm seriously loving this series. There are lots of laugh-out-loud moments (and the chapter headings alone make the book worth the read). If you like steamy romances with suspense and some comedy, then this one is a must read.

Life kept trying to spit rotten eggs at Avery but tenacious spirit and rock solid work ethic keep her upright and pressing forward. Plus, it didn't hurt to have a Derek on her side. Awesome book!!!!!

4.5 stars - Avery is a true heroine in this one. I don't usually think of the male or female leads as being hero/heroine, but Avery definitely fits the bill in this one. The amount of trauma, bad luck, rough times, etc. that she has to go through and that she keeps pulling herself up and making the best of things - wow just wow. There were a couple of things that kept me from giving it 5 stars: 1) I felt that Derek and Avery became intimate a little too quickly and the circumstances were definitely not ideal for finally giving in. That left me a little unsettled. 2) I also felt that there were some unresolved explanations for what her parents did and why. Part of the twists play into this and I was definitely NOT expecting that. I didn't necessarily like Derek from Book #1, but I knew Lani Lynn Vale would redeem him and she did. Derek and Avery are sweet together and the way he steps up for her along with the entire KPD team is heartwarming. Avery deserves all the happiness, especially after all the sh** she's been through!! This one had depth of character - I read it in a day - it kept me enthralled with what would happen next. I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.

I'm really enjoying the Swat 2.0 series so far and can't wait for the third. This one was about Avery and Derek, who we met in the first book. Avery's story is really hard to read and I have a feeling they're all gonna follow a theme. Avery's bullied and bullying is something that is close to my heart, so much so, that I fell in love with Derek for the way he started to treat Avery. Yeah, it didn't start out so great but it ended up being spectacular. The thing for me was that the "bad guy" didn't start with intentions to harm anyone and bullying is like that, but I feel this is why we need to have real conversations with our children instead of just checking in occasionally. Overall, I feel this series is right up their with Boomtown, The Dixie Wardens and Code 11-KPD Swat which were my favorite series. Superb!!

Fries Before Guys by Lani Lynn Vale is the second book in her SWAT Generation 2.0 series. Focusing on the younger members of the Kilgore Police Departments SWAT team this book is Derek Roberts & Avery Flynn's story. Avery is an orphan. With the loss of both her parents over the past few years, both of whom were police officers, she has struggled to get her life together, finish high school, and just survive. Not easy when a girl at school is dead-set on bullying her, the medical bills her parents left behind battle it out with the mortgage for who has to be paid, and the only thing she loves doing, her photography, is jeopardized thanks to her personal bully for life. Shooting Mr. February AKA Derek Roberts for the Kilgore SWAT calendar starts out great - but when Derek flat out refuses a date with Avery all bets are off. Derek wants to keep his life and his balls thank you very much - which is why he told Avery no when she asked him out for a meal. The entire police department would have his hide if he messed around with her. Yeah, she is 19, but she is still in HIGH SCHOOL!!! But he can't help but keep finding himself in her life and pretty soon he will have to make a choice. Between caring what everyone else thinks and caring for the one woman that calls to his heart. So many things have gone wrong and keep going wrong in Avery's life. She is such a strong character - determined to do things on her own and for herself but with Derek in her life she has to sit back and let him take care of her and enjoy it because it is what he WANTS to do! Emotional, twisted, full of drama and love and awesomeness! I just cannot get enough of Lani Lynn Vale! Enjoy!

4 1/2 STARS! Forbidden desire at it's best! FRIES BEFORE GUYS is book two in Lani Lynn Vale's delicious KPD SWAT Generation 2.0 series and center around the chief of police's son Derek and the teen photographer we saw in a previous book Avery. The story line has so much happening that you can't take your eyes off it for a minute. Lots of sass, loads of sexual tension and so much heart you just can't stand it. Really enjoyed them! Avery is a character that makes you want to take her under your wing and be her family. She's lost both of her parents in recent years and is struggling to just get by and finish school. Her photography business is keeping her busy and it's at a photo shoot for the police force calendar where she meets the man she can't stop thinking about .. only problem is, he treats her like someone else's kid sister. Derek takes charge of the scene as soon as he walks in. He's self-assured, always aware and lusting after someone he can't have. What's a guy to do? When situation after situation keeps popping up around her, he decides he's going to be there for her no matter what ... and when he decides to be all in, the chemistry is off the charts! I highly recommend this book and the series as a whole to anyone who enjoys a sassy writing style with a boatload of heart, steamy scenes, and a surrounding cast of close friends and family. You can't go wrong with Kilgore Police Department! Looking forward to more in the series.

The most emotional SWAT book to date. I shed so many tears throughout this entire slow burn, age-gap romance. Avery seriously cannot catch a break. We find that she has lost both of her parents, she's bullied at school, she's about to lose her home, and her car is on its last leg. That is just to name a few of things that are going wrong in her life. One of the few things that bring her joy is her photography and the one man she enjoyed taking pictures of, Derek Roberts. It's too bad he constantly reminds her that he's too old for her. She will just have to daydream about him, sort of like the rest of her horrible life being different than it really is. Once Derek meets Avery he can't seem to stay away from her. The world seems to keep putting her right into his path. He knows he shouldn't desire someone so young, but he can't seem to help himself. When he finds out that she's being abused at school, she's about to lose her home, and basically that her life is just horrible, Derek seems to find himself by her side even more. She becomes his obsession. One he wants to make a fixture in his life. Avery's story will break your heart, it certainly broke mine. For a girl so young to experience so much loss and yet she keeps getting right back up and fighting is extraordinary to read. Derek is the perfect man to be by her side through the hard hitting days, but also the woman he needs to settle his soul.

First impressions can be brutal, but it's the surprising twists that make the journey worthwhile. Neither Derek or Avery are looking for permanent. However, sometimes life has other plans. From awkward first impressions to dangerous situations and steamy attraction, Fries Before Guys is as unpredictable as it is entertaining. Vale packs heat and heart to deliver unforgettable.
