About the Author

Froma Harrop is an independent voice on politics, economics and culture. Though often pigeonholed as “left of center,” she is widely known for her unconventional approach and libertarian streak. Issue-oriented, Harrop tends to follow the ball rather than the team. The conservative Heartland Institute has called her a “favorite lefty.”

Harrop’s twice-weekly column appears in nearly 200 newspapers, including The Seattle Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Denver Post, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Detroit News and Newsday. Media Matters for America ranks Harrop 20th among the top 100 syndicated columnists for total reader reach and 14th based on her subscribers’ average circulation. She has also written for such diverse publications as The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar and Institutional Investor.

Harrop has been a guest on many television and radio programs, including the Lou Dobbs Show, Tucker on MSNBC and PBS’s White House Chronicles. Her column has become a regular feature on the RealPolitics.com Website.

Editor & Publisher named Harrop’s column a Feature of the Year in 2003. Harrop was a 2004 Loeb Awards finalist for economic commentary. She has been honored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and is the recipient of five awards from the New England Associated Press Newspaper Executives Association.

Born in New York City, Harrop was raised in the Long Island suburbs. After graduating from New York University in 1972, she worked on the financial desk at Reuters Ltd., covering business and the Federal Reserve. Harrop later became a financial editor for The New York Times News Service. She returned to her reporting roots as a business writer for The Providence Journal in Rhode Island. She subsequently joined The Journal’s editorial board, where she remains a member. Harrop lives in Providence.
