Description: This book deals with evaluation skills and assessment of musculoskeletal problems. The primary areas covered include manual muscle testing, goniometric measurements, and special tests for each of the major joints.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to educate physical therapy students in the guidelines/basics of evaluation and assessment skills. This book meets all objectives.
Audience: The physical therapy student can benefit from this book; it can also be utilized by orthopedic practitioners as a guide/review of subject material.
Features: Manual muscle testing, goniometry, and special tests are covered, and a general overview of evaluation techniques is provided. Chapters on pain and posture are included. The information provided includes skills that are universal to all students. Unique areas covered include the face and temporomandibular joint as well as specific testing for the abdominal muscles. The hand drawn pictures are good, but the photographs lack quality. At times it is difficult to detect the location of the goniometer or the hand position of the therapist. The pictures which include lettered labeling are excellent.
Assessment: This book provides basic, useful information for the student physical therapist. The areas covered should be general knowledge for all students prior to evaluating a patient. There is an abundance of visual illustrations and summary charts. The need for this book is questionable since there are other books that do review similar evaluation techniques such as Kendall's Muscles: Testing and Function, 4th Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1993) and Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment, 3rd Edition (W.B. Saunders, 1997). I do think this is a good quality book and therefore can be utilized in the education of student physical therapists. I feel the choice of using this book versus others would be purely personal preference.
