Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sandra Kitain M.L.S.
Max Spaniel is the protagonist of this funny, easy-to-read book. Its controlled vocabulary places it in the Level One reader category. Anthropomorphic dogs are always popular, and this one happens to think he is a chef. This paperback, which concentrates on the ABCs and First Words, utilizes popular preschool verbs, which children will want to act out. The humor comes in when words are mistaken and meanings are mixed up. Each word is taken literally, just as a child would interpret it, such as a ?hot' (temperature-wise) dog. The end result is that the Max orders in pizza for all. This is the second book in the "Max Spaniel" series. The amusing illustrations match the action of the text. The first book in this series is entitled Dinosaur Hunt. The text and illustrations provide a fun romp through the new world of words for preschoolers. Reviewer: Sandra Kitain, M.L.S.

Meet Max Spaniel, who claims that he is not a dog but instead is a chef. Max proudly informs readers that one of his ancestors was a chef also while they follow Max and his assistant as they prepare for the special of the day at Max's Diner—pizza! Some of the customers who order something other than the special are in for a surprise. One patron requests, "chili for me," and to his surprise, Max bundles him up in a scarf, hat, and mittens. Imagine what happens when a customer asks for a hot dog! But that is not all; Max entertains the diners with singing, dancing, and magic. Suddenly, there is a take-out order for 100 pizzas, sending Max in a flurry to fill, but there is a big pizza mess. The brightly colored illustrations are entertaining, and the endpapers capture the fun loving personality of Max. This book is part of the "Max Spaniel" series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

Gr 2—This second installment in the early-reader series is laugh-out-loud silly. Max comes from a long line of chefs and embraces the role at the diner where he works with his feline pal. He pushes the special of the day, pizza pie, but has no takers. When chili is ordered, Max delivers a scarf; a hot-dog order is filled with a panting dog and a fan. Finally a busload of people order 100 pizzas with everything to go, and the chef is unable to deliver. Dog and cat hop on a tandem bike and head to the local pizza shop, returning loaded with steaming hot pies. In the end, the customers leave happy and the two friends can finally sit down for a satisfying and well-deserved lunch break. Catrow's watercolor illustrations are exuberant and clever, full of humorous details that kids will love to discover. The typeface and sentence lengths suggest a low-level early reader, but the absence of clear picture clues makes this best for shared reading practice.—Heather Acerro, Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN
