CHAPTER 1
There are many things to do at Grandma and Papa's house. Gavin loves the books and toys and playing 'chef' with Papa. Chloe loves to hear Papa laugh and for Uncle Charlie to chase her down the hall. They both LOVE the smell of Grandma's cookies and to play in the classroom where Grandma teaches students after school. This is a home where children can dream, imagine and play. It is also a place to find adventures. Would you like to read about one of Gavin and Chloe's adventures?
This is what happened one cold winter day. ...
Gavin and Chloe were digging through their toy box. It was too cold to jump on the trampoline and too icy to go down the slide. They normally loved playing in the house, but it was one of those days when ideas were hard to find. They were looking for something fun to do. They were searching for an adventure.
Chloe reached inside the toy box and pulled out a bucket and shovel. She handed the bucket to Gavin and smiled. Gavin knew what that smile meant! The cousins had found an idea.
"Grandma, we're bored! Can we go to the beach?" Gavin asked.
"Can we bring our bucket and shovels?" added Chloe.
"Not today children," Grandma replied; "it is far too cold and windy! In fact, it feels like it may snow. I really wish it would snow! There are many things to do in the snow, ... like watching snowflakes fall and building a snowman."
The cousins left the toy box and looked out the classroom window. No snow was in sight. "I want it to snow, Grandma!" exclaimed Chloe. "Me too", added Gavin.
Grandma smiled. "Because we live near the ocean, it does not snow very often," she explained. "When it does, it rarely snows enough to build a snowman. Even so, I often wish for lots of snow." Grandma sighed then added, "I have an idea! While you WISH for snowflakes outside, you can make paper snowflakes inside. All it takes is imagination and a little work."
Gavin and Chloe decided they did not want to be bored anymore. They wanted to learn how to make inside snowflakes. Grandma found white paper and children's scissors and she taught Gavin and Chloe the steps.
"Fold, fold and fold again. Cut in, then out. ... then OPEN," she explained. It took a few tries, but then ...
"I did it, Grandma!", exclaimed Chloe.
"Look, Grandma! I made an inside snowflake!" Gavin declared.
Grandma stepped into the kitchen while the cousins played with the piles of snowflakes. Soon there were many inside snowflakes scattered across the floor, on the window, under chairs and behind the toy box. There was a snowflake in between Gavin's foot and the train. There was even a snowflake behind Chloe's hair!
Suddenly, Gavin picked up a handful of inside snowflakes and ran to the window. He opened the window as wide as he could and waved the inside snowflakes through the air outside.
"SNOOOW, SNOOOW!" Gavin called out. "Come down from the sky! We have inside snowflakes for you. We are wishing for you! "
