This is a subject I hold close to my heart and near sacred: music and the people who make it. But this isn't an easy book to read; Gomez tells a meandering story through characters I find hard to believe, much less get close to. There's a measure of insincerity throughout and though I want to feel for the members of Bottlecap, I can't. I'd recommend 'Godopossum: Printed Words' over this title to anyone who wants a rockin' read.

Gomez's is a terrific writer. It's the only thing that kept me reading was his prose. But the story itself is long, boring, adolescent, contrived and doesn't not contain a bit of drama in the entire book. The relationships in the story are boring and contain zero substance. However, being a Los Angeles denizen, I did find it interesting when he discribes the area, but the people that occupy this world are as flat and boring as the charcters that this story revolves around. Not one member of Bottlecap is at all interesting nor are they all different from each other. They never suffer any conflicts which should be the driving force of the entire narrative. And as gifted as Gomez is at prose one would think that he would give the heroes something clever to say. Instead, they just sit around and watch TV and talk about movies, eat pizza and drinka couple of beers. And this nonsense goes on for pages. As a matter of fact, Mark (the front man and guitarist) of Bottlecap is dating a PA who talks about movies and so do his band mates. One wonders maybe Mark should be humping his band mates instead--after all they are in LA.
