Alice Duncan’s GENTEEL SPIRITS exudes personality and gentle humor. Daisy Gumm Majesty has an endearing persona much like Stephanie Plum. Both Evanovich and Duncan write their novels in first person voice most effectively. Duncan has an excellent knowledge of the 1920’s and what it was like to live in Pasadena, California in that era. Her details of setting are wonderful and put the reader right into the time and place of the novel. Daisy, a fake spiritualist, is hired to help a movie star diva control her emotions as a film is made. She figures out who is sending poison pen letters to the stars of the film and puts a stop to it. At the same time, Daisy has to contend with problems at home. Her beloved husband Billy is dying from injuries sustained in the First World War. The novel is at times light-hearted and humorous and at others serious and thoughtful—shades of Jacqueline Winspear. I strongly recommend this novel as well as Alice Duncan’s other books.

I've just finished reading Daisy Gumm Majesty's latest antics, and I hated for it to end. Alice Duncan has created a delightful, sometimes mischievous, heroine in Daisy, whose strong will and determination to prove herself invaluable to the rich society in Pasadena, cira 1920s, helps support her family, including her beloved war-injured husband. Her antics, although legal, prove to be a bane to police detective Sam Rotondo's life. If you're an Amelia Peabody fan, you'll love Daisy, who could be Amelia's protégé. I can't wait to read about Daisy's next adventure.

In 1922, the affluent residents of Pasadena, California consider Daisy Gumm Majesty a highly regarded spiritualist as Desdemona. Hollywood especially enjoys seeing those who communicate with the beyond and as such are frequent patrons of Daisy. She knows her spiritualist work keeps her family fed as her spouse Billy returned from the war with failing health due to a German bullet and the Kaiser's mustard gas that keep him wheelchair bound. Daisy worries about her husband but practices her trade. Due to Daisy's friend Harold Kinkaid, Desdemona hosts a séance attended by silent screen star Lola de la Monica. The impressed actress hires Desdemona as the spiritualist on her latest movie. Making matters difficult for Daisy is Billy's best friend police detective Sam Rotondo, who she is attracted to, works on the same set. When threatening letters frighten Lola, Daisy and Harold investigate. Genteel Spirits is a warm Daisy Gumm Majesty historical tale (see Hungry Spirits) that brings to Southern California in the aftermath of the war to end all wars. The cast including Spike the obedience school expelled canine makes the story line humorous and optimistic but is counterbalanced by Billy's health. The mystery serves as a subordinate subplot to the sense of time and place of people trying to move on with their lives following the war. Alice Duncan provides a delightful spotlight on Pasadena and Hollywood circa 1922. Harriet Klausner
