Islam came on the scene, with a message, philosophy and code of conduct, perfect by all means, with its advent, the new faith revolutionised the contemporary world in a very short span of time. It also brought along with its beliefs and practices, a new culture, which gradually build a new civilization, now known as Islamic Civilization. Islam has made a great contribution to the development and growth of human civilization, education and intellect in particular and the whole society, in general. This is a well-known fact now that Muslims were leading the world of knowledge and wisdom when Europe was still a dark continent, far behind in education and science. In the early era of Islam the Muslims were in full command of the science and technology of the times. They not only unearthed adopted and preserved the lost treasure of the Greek wisdom, but also promoted it to new heights. Muslim academics and scientists were among the leading lights of that period of history. They contributed a lot to the growth of all branches of knowledge he that Philosophy, Logic literature, Geography, History Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Medicine. About the Author

Dattatray Narayan Phadke (6. 1949). Graduated in Chemistry (1972). He entered into the field of Library and Information Science after doing M.Sc.(Physical Chemistry) from University of Pune (1973). Completed M.Lib. from University of Mumbai (1986) and subsequently Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from University of Pune with the topic "Use of GIS in Library" (1999). Dr. Phadke after initially working for a few years (VRDE, DRDO), Ahmednagar moved on to Central Library IIT Bombay (1979). Since than he has been serving at IIT Bombay at different levels associated with various activities of the Library. Currently he is one of the Senior Assistant Librarians. He also worked on MODROB / institute sponsored project on Providing Comprehensive Electronic Security to Valuable Library Collection. Dr. Phadke has contributed a numberof articles in journals, seminars and conferences. He has a book edited entitled "In Search of Excellence-Librarianship" published in the honour of his guide Dr. S.R. Ganpule by Multi-Tech Pub. Co. Mumbai (1999). As an expert in Library and Information Science he is associated with M.Lib.Sc. Programme of YCMOU. Nasik. where he has contributed a number of course books and workbooks on SOUL software of INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad. He is recognized as Ph.D. Guide by YCMOU. Nasik and a few other Universities.
