CHAPTER 1
It was New Year's Eve.
Thousands of twinkling stars illuminated the night sky.
And at that moment, as a young couple looked up into the starlit sky expectant and a little nervous, there above them high in the heavens, sat an excited little angel looking down towards Earth.
He had shiny blond curls and soft, warm, brown eyes. And when he smiled, it was as if the sun shone right into your heart.
They called him Sunsmile.
Tonight was no ordinary night.
Excitement filled the heavens. It was New Year's Eve and many little angels were making the trip to Earth that night to be born. Born into families that would love and care for them.
Scamper, who was always scampering about, was in such a muddle. He had put his special new wings in a very safe place but had forgotten where that was. He needed those wings to fly him down to Earth to be born the next day.
Scamper had been chosen to be the first baby born on New Year's Day, which was a very big honour indeed. If he didn't find his wings, someone else would take his place. Then he would have to wait once again to make his trip to Earth and that might mean waiting many heavenly years.
"Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear," he cried and as he sat down on his special little star, a huge tear slid slowly down his cheek.
Well, it just so happened that Sunsmile, who was sitting close by putting the finishing touches on his own wings, felt a sadness touch his heart.
Someone's crying in the heavens he thought and he put his wings down very carefully and looked around. There, sitting on a little star that was slowly losing its glow, was his best friend Scamper. But oh dear, was that a bright shiny tear sliding down Scamper's cheek?
"What is it Scamper? You've lost your smile," said Sunsmile putting an arm around his friend. "Please don't cry."
