Don't view Greatest Hits as a definitive singles retrospective, or even a comprehensive overview of the group's career -- that's what the latter-day, CD-era compilation is for. Instead, this release is a product of its time, offering the biggest hits ("Time Has Come Today," "I Can't Turn You Loose"), plus a representative sampling of their psychedelicized soul albums. Not perfect, with a bit too much generic material -- and the original album Time Has Come Today is arguably a better introduction -- yet it still does its job well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
