Green Embraces: Identity Reclaimed

A multi-media book focused on reclaiming the true identity our Creator gave to each one of his beloved children!

In John 8:36, Jesus says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” We all long for freedom and yet so often the pain and guilt and shame of our past imprisons us and gets in the way of truly experiencing the kind of freedom and the kind of abundant, joyful life that Jesus offers to each one of us. I have worked with teenagers through the ministry of Young Life for the past thirty-five years. I can honestly say that the number one issue facing young people is this lack of identity, a lack of knowing who they truly are as individuals created in the image of God with the capacity to know Him personally.

To watch young people discover the truth of their identity, is to see them set free and to see them discover, for the first time, their God-given purpose and destiny. And it isn’t just young people. People of all ages in our world today are struggling to find peace and so often the root issue is simply this - not knowing who they truly are and whose they are. In this e-book, Green Embraces: Identity Reclaimed, Tamara J. Buchan and Lindsey D. Osborne have offered a concise, succinct, powerful window into what it means for us to deny the lies of our past and to embrace the truth of who we really are in Christ. The words presented here, help us to discover that we are truly loved, that our story is part of a greater divine story, that we are forgiven and truly accepted and that we have a true place of belonging. If embraced, these words have the power to bring true freedom, the kind of freedom that can only come when we see ourselves the way that God sees us, a beloved child of the King!

Marking moments and capturing memories, celebrating, laughing, growing, and going outside...these are a few of my favorite things. Being a writer, a wife, a Young Life trainer, a Crossfit coach, and a woefully-in-need-of grace, Mom and teacher, fills up my days. Ideas, memories, song lyrics, to do’s, and prayers fill up my mind. Words, written or typed, capture what my busy brain cannot. There is a chalkboard that hangs in our kitchen to send and receive messages that shape our family. For October, it was a Kansas City Royals World Series montage with a gold crown, a bright blue “KC”, and baseballs. Erasing it after the loss was torture and therapeutic at the same time. We transitioned to our “We are thank-FULL board...” and mixed in some spelling words. Writing words makes what is in my head a little more real and tells a story that marks a moment. With blogs, baby-books, Christmas letters, undergrad history papers, and seminary theological summations, I have written pages upon pages. I have a clear writing voice but brevity often escapes me. After growing up in Colorado, I moved to Missouri (where?!), to attend William Jewell College. There I met great girl friends and a dark haired freshman guy named Drew who was in my accounting class. Drew and I did so much homework together that semester we couldn’t help but fall in love. We dated for 18 months in college before taking a year long break to pursue a more mature relationship with Jesus individually.Only after I moved an hour away for my first job did Drew and I decide we were the ones for each other forever. I moved to a small town in Missouri to work full time for Young Life, a non denominational Christian ministry for high school kids. I was changed as I tried to change the lives of students. I became quickly convinced God did not come to make bad people into good people, but to take dead people and make them truly alive. Young Life tells adolescents they are treasured, known, beloved, and okay. I get to work training full time staff people as they begin the important work of organizing a community around sharing the important message of Jesus’ great love. What I teach is missional and theological; I can’t help but be continually changed by what I study and share. The past three years have transformed my life physically through Crossfit. Reaching a level of fitness that makes me believe I can do heavy and hard things, has changed my shape and psyche. I enjoy helping to train and coach others towards their own success. Nothing is more of a workout than chasing and enjoying my energetic children. God gave me my kids and they are a gift- reminders of how much God loves me, and visible evidence of how simple faith can be. Eli, our eldest son, Andi, our only daughter, and Oakley, our last but not least, are our tri-fold blessing. I cannot imagine how God will continue to lead me...I’m amazed and humbled by where I’ve been. Thanks for reading and taking the words I write inside your head and heart. Peace, Lindsey
