GROUSIN' BUDDIES: Tales of Fins, Feathers and Friends

As our good friend, Retz, often says, “Life just keeps comin’ at ya.”  This book is all about life with its fickle little twists and turns.  We (the authors) met playing volleyball and grew to be best friends, business associates, and hunting partners.  In our 30+ years of friendship we have played, laughed, loved, cried, and grieved together.  Set against the backdrop of Northern Wisconsin, the stories in this book were not written specifically to go into a book.  This book “just kind of happened” because of our love not only of writing but of the people, places, and events that shaped our lives; it happened because of our passion for the outdoors, its lessons, beauty, and bounty.  Light a fire, grab a libation, put your feet up and share a bit of life with us.

About the Author

Bob Feller, a.k.a. Grousin’ Buddy, was born in Antigo, Wisconsin, in 1950, the youngest of four children. Ray and Marian raised their children in the peaceful and protected environment of a small town, where a boy need only hop on his bike and ten minutes later find himself in the woods. Bob’s collegiate years were also spent in the north woods, graduating from U.W. Superior in 1973. Fond memories of hunting and fishing excursions with his dad or uncle, Fred Feller, fill every visit to the land of his birth. Though Ray, Marian, and Fred have all passed on, the Feller clan still holds on to a small cabin on Bass Lake.

Bob currently lives in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, with his wife, Ellen, and his daughters, Lauren and Haley, teaching and coaching for the MPSD. But in October, you’re much more likely to find him tramping some fire lane in the plentiful county forests north of Antigo. In fact, he won’t be alone. Tramping with him will be his best friend and business partner (they run Nelson-Feller Tennis Camp), Bob Nelson.

Bob Nelson, a.k.a. Nellie, was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1949. Nellie’s a “homer.“ After earning his degree at U.W. La Crosse, Nellie returned to his hometown to work at the YMCA where he was instrumental in creating many of the tennis programs that are still going strong there today. Nellie also coaches tennis and has run several businesses, currently a real estate agent. Nellie grew up with a hunting heritage, but was mostly a fisherman, being on the shores of Lake Michigan. Nellie resides in rural Manitowoc County with his wife, Pat, and three yellow labs, Blake, Scratch and Maggie. Nellie has two children, Heather (Manitowoc) and Trent (Milwaukee). Trent is also an avid grouse hunter, thus, the tradition carries on.
