Overview

In the summer of 1986, three young American models are chosen to join a modeling agency in Europe's fashion capital of Milan. United as roommates by chance, Star, Joanne and Casey soon find their dreamed-of careers as models taking paths as different as their personalities. Star, who leaves behind a waitress job along with a handful of crumpled up dollar tips, sees her beauty as a way to move to the top of Milan's social strata. Joanne, raised in a privileged lifestyle, is expected to continue an Ivy League education, which doesn't interest her as much as a young photographer she meets on a casting. Casey is a naive seventeen year old who is ready for adventure, even the dangerous kind. Together, these three learn the funny, unexpected and sometimes ugly truth about growing up beautiful.

About the Author

Lori Jones had a sixteen-year modeling career from 1981 through 1997 that included runway, print for magazines & catalogs, TV commercials, and an album cover for Kool and the Gang's, Ladies' Night.

Jones flew to Milan in 1982 and ended up living and modeling in Italy, Germany and Spain over the next five and a half years. Always interested in writing, she kept journals of her extensive travels throughout Europe and North Africa that included notes on people she met along the way.

Her debut novel, Growing Up Beautiful, offers a peek of what went on in that foreign world of fashion in the 1980's after the cameras were set aside.

This juicy glimpse into the inside world of modeling is a page-turner. (Jones own sixteen year modeling career definitely lends authenticity to the novel.) And it's told from the alternating POV's of three models (you know we're suckers for a multiple narrative!) In a word, you will LOVE.

I enjoyed this story of three young women who travel to Milan with dreams of making it as models. Each girl has a very different experience with the dangers that can face young models: predatory men, competitive women and being on their own in a foreign country. The stories are told from the viewpoint of these three women as they navigate the modeling world finding friendship, betrayal and even love. I couldn't put it down!
