About the Author

Lynn Gray Ross learnt to knit as a child and studied weaving in Stockholm. She was a textile artist on the Isle of Arran for the past several decades, funding and managing craft-based community projects on the island. In addition to teaching adults in the UK, US and Europe, she also developed award-winning projects with local schools. Her work is exhibited on Arran and in textile exhibitions worldwide.

Ross, an expert weaving instructor with numerous years of experience, brings her knowledge of the art of hand weaving to a wider audience in her first book. After a beautifully illustrated introduction to the history and traditions of weaving (including non-Western), she provides an introduction to the process of weaving, including building a simple frame loom, warping a loom, and the weaving process itself: from forming the shed to changing colors and finishing the piece. Ross then quickly moves into weaving design and creating a portfolio—two topics that are more appropriate for weavers who have mastered the basics—along with a chapter on choosing yarns (with a meandering turn into dyeing yarn with natural dyes). The organization feels haphazard, and the content doesn't fit with the book's subtitle—"the basics"—since the coverage of weaving fundamentals is cursory at best. VERDICT Ross has tremendous respect for her craft's rich history, and the photographs are beautiful, but the wandering narrative style will be frustrating to beginners who are looking for straightforward instructions. Deborah Chandler's classic Learning To Weave is still the best how-to for beginners.
